Ok Guys, ive decided on getting my wedding wine from o briens but im just wondering is there any of their branches that specialise in the wedding events or do you just go to your nearest outlet?. id be near the blanchardstown o briens but wouldnt mind travelling to one of their bigger shops,i do recall being in the beacon store down in sandyford which was huge.also ive pretty much decided on protocolo for the red but not sure on the white.thinking around the € 10 mark for each, any suggestions on this aswell cheers.

O'Briens also have a big branch in The Park in Carrickmines, it's on the left before you get to the main roundabout but I'd say the Beacon is marginally bigger.

There's a special phone number on this webpage ...

Cheers, i was thinking about the larger supermarkets but was always under the impression o briens wines had better quality wines for the money,i think ill try the paco and lola albarino in supervalue and see what its like .cheers

Paco e Lola is really good for the price, I think, even though Dunnes Stores was selling it for €9.00 two Christmases ago and the price has since shot up in SuperValu, who sometimes put it in their wine sales with an RRP of €15, which it definitely is not worth.

Remember, though, that for weddings, people usually expect bad wine and this is because people stop being able to taste it after a while. It's usually not worth splashing out on except for the top table during the meal, but not after. IMHO.

I'd agree with sarkozy, good wine for the top table and plonk for everyone else. Most guests will have had a few beers before the meal so they're unlikely to notice or care if the wine they're served with the meal is pretty mediocre. Even if the bride and groom source the wine, you can always blame the hotel afterwards - 'We really did want good wine with the meal but their prices were outrageous and even the midpriced stuff we went for was p1ss poor plonk'.

ive 150 guests and think im going to get an even split of red to white as its early october,if it was in the summer id go more white..i agree i certainly wont be seving up any old crap to my guests, think i can get a decent red and white for 10 euro each,i tried that paco and lola white last night ,it was 15 euro in supervalue,i did like it nice balance to it but i personally think the pinot grigio have more of a fruity note which is my preference but then again it is very personal.if i go with o briens they will take back 25% of the order so at least i can order more in case and just return...im looking at about 120-130 bottles just to cover myself..

I'm not saying it's a polite thing to do and we didn't do it for ours. But we did take advice from the venue when they only made available a small number of thoroughly mediocre, good value whites and reds (unless clients really did want to splash out obscenely).

I'm just saying that weddings are expensive and wine is rarely the thing people remember about weddings (unless it was incredibly bad), and people rarely agree about how good a wine is.

Pinot Grigio is notorious for being of variable quality. There are some lovely ones, but these tend to be the expensive ones. They're cheap for a reason: they're a bit rough. You can get some excellent New Zealand sauvignon blancs at reasonable prices, especially buying bulk.

My personal recommendation would be I'd get this French wine, if they can get it in. It's the best €10 bottle of white I've ever tasted. Albrouze import it, which used to be on Leeson St. The shop has stopped trading, but the business is still supplying the restaurant trade and they'll be going online in a while to the general public. Think about giving them a call. Usually you get a free bottle per case ordered.
