I am spending a week in Portugal in October to get married then returning to Ireland and going to mexico for 10 days. The OH booked the honeymoon via a travel agent but not the insurance as he said they are higher but now he thinks we don't need it at all as:
    a) We have Aviva Insurance which covers medical abroad
    b) We booked via a travel agent they are responsible for hotel cancellations etc

Can anyone advise if I need travel insurance, and what extras I could need?

Personally I think its a no brainer not taking out Travel insurance. When you consider what your spending to get married what's another at most €100 for some peace of mind.

Does the Aviva policy cover medical treatment abroad to a large maximum like a million dollars or more and does it cover repatriation for treatment or recovery back in Ireland? If the answer to either question is not a definite 'yes' then you need travel insurance.

Thanks for the answers. It covers in patient 100k, repatriation 1 million. What type of insurance am I looking for? I was under the impression that if booking through a travel agent gives more protection, so that coupled with the health insurance means I'[d be buying insurance to cover things I already have, and the only way to get extras are to buy the more expensive premium, is that right?

As you already have health insurance this usually gives you a discount on the travel insurance policy.

I have Aviva health insurance and have multi-trip.com travel insurance. For annual world wide premium cover is about €65. They ask you which healthcare plan you are on and adjust the price accordingly.

The travel insurance will cover things like lost baggage, passport, monies, delayed departure and other things. You will need to read the cover documents fully to make sure you get what you need for your trip.

What if your flight back from your wedding is delayed by a day or two which then means you miss your flight for your h/moon? It could be that this is when a travel insurance policy could kick in (again, dependent on cover levels).

If you can afford the cost of sickness, injury, repatriation, missed flights, lost luggage etc then you won't need it.
I broke my shoulder abroad a few years ago and insurance covered the cost of changing flights aand sending my bags home by courier.
The ehic covered my treatment in Europe.
Personally it's a no brainer to get an annual worldwide multi trip policy.
Got to get cover. Ie you can lessen the cost through having insurance with aviva or whoever. I think code WIT also gives you a further discount.

In-patient up to 100K doesn't sound like a real travel policy. If you go near a hospital in the US, that wouldn't cover anything other than treatment for a minor injury.

Repatriation cover is one million, are you sure you haven't quoted them the wrong way round?

Nope, that's what it says anyway. It's aviva. Clicked on a lot of their plans and it's the same way around in them.

Thanks flikflak, that's a very good point - can I get insurance that would actually cover missing the honeymoon if I was delayed? Would they cover sticking me on another flight etc?

I just didn't want to be buying a plan that's only covering me for things already covered i.e. if I buy one of the budget plans, that's not going to actually give me anymore than I have already?

Take out insurance, my sister in law went on holiday's with her husband & three children in July to England. She suffered a brain hemmerage the first morning of her holiday's & died 5 day's later. She had travel insurance which was so much easier on them all bringing her home & medical bills.

    Very sorry for your loss
