advice on hatch budget 3-4k

    looking to buy hatch would prefer audi a3 or golf mark 5 1.4-1.6l engine,now given nature that car would be at least 10y old,what one should look out for on these.
    As owned golf mark 4 in the past that turned out to be biggest piece of S***t with piston seals wearing off before it even reached 100k miles and drinking oil in gallons,it put me off for a good while from any german cars.

    I know best choice would be to go with jap mazda3 or toyota since owned couple older models of them and only service they would ever need is once a year check up before nct in most cases.

    So guess the question comes down to is it worth forking out more on a nicer shell of a car and more plastic,or sticking with what have worked best for years.thx

    Never thought of focus,but as i think now all i heard from ppl that own them that they are good daily drivers in general,will need to look more into them.thx
