Is it difficult to get a job with RTE and Tv3? How do they recruit employees?

Wow, imagine the rage of having paid your TV licence and then having them not pay you a single penny for 9 months of work.

RTÉ over the past couple of years have shed almost 25% of their workforce. They haven't been on a recruitment drive and if any vacancies arise that can't be filled internally (no backfill required) jobs will be advertised on rte.ie

TV3 seem to use a lot of unpaid interns, with no prospect of a paid role.

Did you ever consider moving farther afield?

No, am to old, all my 40 something mates have left it to, it's a low paid job with crazy long hours for teens and 20 somethings from art and design backgrounds nowadays, the few jobs there are I've no design skills. I had a good run anyway, time to move on to something else.

This! Your chances of finding work in RTE or TV 3 would be very slim indeed, both have made cutbacks in the past few years, though it might help if you knew someone working there.

I would suggest trying production companies or radio stations if you are interested in working in this area.

Try jobsdone.ie and go into the jobs section. I saw a few ads listed for TV3 there a few weeks ago

It shouldn't be that difficult getting a job with them now since they're recruiting a lot through jobbridge.

I know for a fact Eddy Hobbs got his Spanish au pair a job there after she graduated from college. It has a lot to do with who you know if you want a paid position which is unfair considering we all have to chip in and pay our tv licence to fund RTE.

Bull****...Eddie Hobbs doesn't work for RTÉ and hasn't had a significant gig with them since 2008!!

Out of interest, I am interested in video editing/production myself, but also don't have design skills. You found this a real impediment to getting work? Does one not exist without the other?

Myself and two other friends with no graphics abilities (before you ask, tried for years to learn programmes but thats useless without a design aesthetic) haven't got an interview in years, all jobs (the few there are!) say some thing like "Wanted video editor with After Effects/Motion Graphic skills", I can't speak for everyone but the 3 of us have 60 plus years of broadcast, film and corporate work between us and haven't had interviews in years or offers of work in years as they all want fancy graphics kids. But best of luck! The easy way is to put 'video editor jobs Ireland" into google and see how many come up, firstly vast majority are poxy internships, then the rest are like this recent one, why would they hire someone to just edit when they can get someone for the same price to do all the motion graphics, makes sense:

    "Video Producer/Editor
Creative Nation MCN Limited - Dublin
Creative Nation is looking for a bright, motivated individual that has a passion for Production & Digital Media

The ideal candidate will have the ability to edit & produce regular content for our owned channels.

They will also be responsible for finding and licensing in-video content, capturing and editing green screen video of an actor(s) and pre-planning videos.

    Responsibilities:

Work closely with other team members to help grow our owned & operated Production department
Produce content for our Facts. and CN channels on YouTube
Source and license any video segments/ clips needed for an episode.
Write up video plans for tri-weekly videos.
Manage the capturing of any video containing actors.
Manage and propose the required marketing spend for each video.

    Minimum Qualifications:

Experience in Adobe Premier & Adobe After Effects
    Experience with Adobe Photoshop
Good knowledge on the workings of YouTube and online video in general
The ability to work with green screen technology
Basic Knowledge on use of video capturing equipment
    Excellent communication skills
A solid grasp on the social networking & new media environment"

I never said Eddie Hobbs works for RTE did I? But he did once and had his own TV show 'Rip-Off Republic'.

No He didn't. Rip off Republic was an Independent Production commissioned by RTE. Funnily enough produced by Independent Productions formerly AGTEL. So how he got his au pair into RTE would be interesting to know. Especially considering it a FACT!
