Hi guys, sorry if its really obvious but I'm not finding a direct answer on the website

I passed my theory test, got the eyesight report and gathered the various forms for my learner permit

Do I have to book an appointment to get learner permit or is that just people getting full licences? The book an appointment section is looking for driver number which I don't think I have

Yes, as painful as it sounds you have to go book an appointment to get your learners permit. In Dublin this process can take over 3 weeks to wait for. There was a centre opened recently in Clarehall that might be lesser known about so it could be a good shout.

Thats irish public services for ya.

Go to ndls.ie and book an appointment. Also make sure to have all documentation with you they do check

If you are in a hurry to get your permit, go to your local NDLS centre very early in the morning before they open. They generally keep some appointments open for walk ins. They won't see you there and then, but they may give you an appointment for later on in the day. There will probably be other people there, queuing up to do the very same thing as you are & there are only so many walk in appointments available. So when I say get there early, I do mean get there early.

If you have never had a learner permit before or done any EDT lessons, you won't have one. You should be able to book an appointment using just your PPS number.

You dont (may not) need to book an appointment. I just walked in today to get my replacement full. Was seen in 10 minutes and was gone similar case when I went in to get a permit for BE a few months back. I went in around 11 a few months back and 1 today. Check your local centre. Mine was the Cork one. http://www.ndls.ie/en/Online-Services/ndls-centre-availability.html

One difference is I already had a driver number both times.

The Leopardstown centre was still seeing walk ins there and then at twelve o clock when I was there today. I was almost annoyed that I'd booked an appointment, but everything was so quick and efficient I couldn't really complain.

You can also book with your PPSN number. A driver number is not essential to book on the website. Some centres have quiet periods during the day, but making an appointment is recommended.
