Wheel alignment question.

I got two new front tyres the other day but didn't get the wheels aligned. (Me being cheap).

Now on the m50 today the steering wheel is vibrating more especially around the 65/70 mph mark.

Is this due to wheel alignment or a balance problem.
I need it fix ASAP (morning) as I'm off on a short holiday tomorrow.

    More than likely balance

Was it a chain or a local fella that did them?

what type of car is it?

weather its a chain or a local fella is irrelevant. your wheels haven't been properly balanced. If this thread turns into a garage bashing thread I'll go mental.

If your steering wheel is off centre or the car is pulling one way or another thats the tracking. if you have a vibration between 60-70 thats the balancing. Return to the garage and ask them to recheck the balancing. more than likely one of the weights came off.

I'm going to do that, but I can nearly expect him to say it's your wheel alignment and charge me €45.
    It an independent tyre garage.

Wheel balancing always was included in price whenever ( and wherever) I bought new tyres.

    Alignment was never included, though.

The vibrating is most likely caused by unbalanced wheels. Not an expensive job, should have been done before putting the wheels back tbh.

Buying a new tyre fitted inthe vast majority of cases includes balancing. I wouldn't be paying the guy any extra tbh. It certainly has nothing to do with the tracking/wheel alignment. Having said that, it is a good idea (but not vital) to get the tracking done at the same time.
Regarding pulling left/right, I used to work in a tyre centre, and a good % of cars that came in complaining of pulling, usually had the tyre pressures all over the place, or had a slow puncture in the front.

if he says that let him do it. test drive the car and if it's still the same tell him you are reporting him the the ITIA (Irish Tyre Industry Association) on the basis he's ripping people off and giving the industry a bad name.

Ive gone to a few places recently getting prices where they said they'll do wheel alignment FOC

I think its getting very competitive on the tyre market that it has to be done to be in with a chance of competing !

Well it turned out it was an old valve rattling around inside the tire, car is running smooth now, guy said if it's still there bring it back.
    Couldn't ask for more.

Other than not leaving the old valve in there and you not having to come back to get it sorted out

Ah well at least they were honest. They could have spouted bullsh1t. And they didn't try to charge him. It also shows that they changed the valve, which some places wouldn't.
I say fair play to them. These things happen.

    Whoa! Calm down there fella

it is relevant imo. We have people coming in all the time looking for balance with new tyres on the car. A lot of independent fellas dont bother. you will get the odd lazy fella in a chain but more often than not, in my experience (16yrs), the indy fella hasnt bothered to balance it.

As it turned out here the indy hasnt bothered to take the old valve out of the tyre which is just as bad as not balancing it.
