Repainting furniture -varnish?

    I've decided to give some life to some old bits of furniture including stools and mirror etc. I've painted them with general interior paint but the finish is that dull Matt look so is there something I can put on too to give a richer finish? A varnish or chaulk finish maybe?

    Give them a coat of clear varnish.
