VW Polo 1.0l 2001 fuel consumption way too high

    Hey,
I bought a Polo and I have no idea what's wrong with it. The Car is 2001 1.0l petrol.
The problem: It does around 65-70km per 10l of petrol around town. The driving is not aggressive or anything like that. Tried driving different ways to see if it improves, same stuff. I live in Kilkenny so it's a small town.
What I tried so far: I changed Spark Plugs, all filters, ignition leads. Compression test was done on it, all fine. Was put on Diagnostics and only error that came up was Evap Canister, so I bought it and just waiting for it, but I hardly believe that it's causing the problem. I was told by the man who did Compression test and diagnostic that the fuel is to thick. The spark plugs gets way too oily and darkish (Have no clue how to say it, but hopefully you get the idea)
    Please someone help, thank you.

If you are only driving it around Kilkenny city then I wouldn't be surprised at that usage.
A car will only settle down when on an open road. Them polo's are thirsty little buggers.

Do you ever do long drives out of the city? Does it change its ways?

I agree with above poster. 20mpg is not that far fetched in stop start traffic. A 13 yr old car is not as efficient as a newer one. Those Polo's are heavy cars as well.
How did you measure economy? Make sure you brim tank, drive until empty and then note how many litres you put in to fill again.

Try giving it a good lively spin on motorway might help clear any build up.

Although town driving is going to affect consumption, I think 20 us still too low unless its really bumper to bumper uphill stuff. I have a 2.5 automatic petrol that gives over 20 in the stop start stuff

I suppose you checked the tyres were properky inflated?

I would next dry a motorway run at 100kmh to see what consumption is there, would expect in the late 40's mpg.

Thank you for the fast replay's I'll try doing a motorway run the next chance I get. And yeah I measured by driving until empty and then put only 10l exact and do again :)

That doesn't work. You dont know what's empty. Like if you park my van on a slope near empty it goes to empty and doesn't return back up.

Full tank to full tank is best way.

Or what I do is only fill by 60. Every time. And a fuel program averages everything out to give me a running average
