DART Underground: some progress?

    Folks,

The current issue of Modern Railways has another interview with IE's CEO, David Franks. There's an interesting bit at the end regarding DART Underground.

Apparently, the courts don't want IE hanging around forever before executing the CPOs for the land required for the project, so the government is going to "find" some money to fund the purchases.

Some good sensible thinking there from David Franks. Getting the railway extended to the airport and running Inter City trains from there is key to reviving IÉ.

Irish Rail and CIE have wanted to do this for donkey years. The trouble is getting the tarmac loving skulls in Kildare Street to okay what is an essential project.

I would have said Clongriffin station was almost built with the intention of connecting to DUB. I would have assumed it would have been made a DART line though, as they like saying 'they don't have enough trains'.

It seems that Clongriffen would be a good choice for a junction towards DUB as there seems to be space there with fields between it and Portmarnok to have a line branch off, with space available to run the line over to DUB.

If they really intend to run Intercity trains to DUB (which is a good idea I feel), it really aught to be a through-service, meaning that they may have to build the line under the airport (with underground station) and then point the line north/north east around Swords and joining up with the Northern Line at Balbriggan.

If the Interconnector was ever built, and it could handle Intercity traffic (be it diesel or some future electric Intercity), then there's potential there for a Cork / Dublin / Airport / Belfast service.
