How bad was the chrome? It can be restored quite well unless it's completely flaked off. Rust can be removed very easily.

There's a few places that specialise in bike restoration in the UK but if he want's to do it here maybe an auto restoration place could do it. I've a friend who restores vintage VW vans. Just sent him a message to see if there's anyone he recommends.

Check out Bicycle Design Centre, though I'm not sure they do chrome. Car resto places may be best for that.

Depending on how bad the chrome is, have a go at it with wire wool from a diy shop - get a fine grade like 00 or 000 for the best finish - coarse grades like 1 and upwards will scratch.

Unless the chrome is completely gone, you'll be amazed at how effectively the wire wool cleans it.

However, it will remove decals and transfers, so be careful around them. Also, it will scratch soft aluminium, so stick to steel and harder alloys - as instructions often say: "Test on an inconspicuous area first".

If you do need a nice chrome job in the UK, I recommend Derby Plating, which we use at work (classic Mercedes restoration), but they aren't cheap...
