USB Ports

My USB ports have decided not to work anymore, god knows why. They were working fine before, never had a problem with them, now they just won't work.

I don't know exactly what the problem is, so I'll just explain the situation.

If I connect my phone, it will not allow for data transfer nor will it charge it, however, once I turn my phone off, it begins to charge it. I recently got a new webcam, it recognises the device, attempts to install the drivers, but fails to. The device works on different computers, so I can say with certainty that it is not the product's fault. In addition, all other devices that were working up until now have stopped working with the exception of my wireless mouse.

I'm completely stumped here, anyone got any ideas for a solution?

Did you update or install anything recently that might have a change / effect on your usb ports?

When you go in to Device Manager is there a yellow exclamation mark over the usb icon? You could try disabling / re-enabling them or checking drivers.

Failing that it could be a hardware fault.

    Odd one though!

I had installed a program a week before which would enable me to use my ps3 controller on my computer, it was working fine with no problems so I don't believe it has caused it. There haven't been complaints made against the software, so I'm fairly confident it hasn't caused it.

Here's a pic of my device manager: i imgur com/654xNcx jpg (As a new user, I'm not allowed to give the link, so please just insert the dots yourself) =P

As a pure test, can you uninstall that ps3 controller link / reboot and try the ports again? Just to rule it out completely.

Also get into the device manager and delete all your USB devices.

This usually makes Windows find them all again, almost all but not specifically all should be plug n play.

That's assuming that you haven't a physically bad connection, I don't like charging via USB unless it its a dedicated hot port [red], the occasional charge is no harm.

USB can be rock solid and work for years over multiple USB multi ports and internal drive ports and for unknown reasons may then only work on one.

If I'm communication with a device connected and hank it out, I sometimes lose that port until reboot.

But the ports do wear out too over time.

I uninstalled the program and rebooted, didn't solve anything sadly.

Another little thing on USB, any particular device needs a port number, modern devices will use any number the computer offers, some devices may only be able to access port 1~4.

Therefore the actual order of connection of devices may be important. If a device can only work on ports 1~4 and there are already seven devices installed, that device won't work, ie it has to be installed early on so it gets the early port numbers it needs.

Most modern devices don't mind what number, but if a device or software has stolen their Port Number they won't or might not work again. Hense my advice to delete all USB from the device manger so the PC can reallocate port numbers to all requests.

    Hi,

To follow up, the problem would appear to have fixed itself.

I have no explanation what caused this or what fixed this. Thanks for all the suggestions though.
