What with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse riding through the summer in Gaza, West Africa, Iraq, Ukraine (and more places only I'd be too sad to look them up) this unlikely happy ending from an old disaster kind of made my eyes leak a bit:

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/08/indonesian-family-finds-daughter-swept-away-in-2004-tsunami

A little girl was swept out to sea in the tsunami, rescued by a fisherman and brought up by a kindly old woman on an island, till a relative saw her and thought she looked familiar. She's 14 now, and back with her family, who have taken in her lovely foster-grandmother too.

It seems like the work of the Brothers Grimm, but I want it to be true. Are there any other unexpectedly happy stories to cheer us all up?

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/true-story-that-is-not-really-on-website.html
Dublin locals today reported seeing a man, allegedly answering to the name of Max, skipping through Dublin City with a big smile on his face. When questioned by passers-by as to the cause of his elation, he is rumoured to have exclaimed "It's Friday Mothafukas!" before performing a ballet twirl and disappearing into a crowd.

In other parts of the city, a pandemic of good cheer and a sense of well-being are reported to be spreading as Dubliners look forward to a weekend off work, with possible sunshine, and as many cups of coffee as they care to drink.

    More to follow.
