SORD- 1st Anniversary - NOTICE: don't get caught for backtax

Just a note to all those who completed a SORD notice (Statutory Off Road Declaration) for vehicles you don't use.

The 1st anniversary of the system is up at the end of August. You should received a renewal notice, much like your tax renewal for those by now. However, and as Galway County Council have just confirmed to me on the phone now, this is not happening automatically.

So, to avoid finding out post 31st August the you have been lumbered with a tax you could have avoided - but which (conveniently) the Dept 'forgot' to remind you of.................either print out the form to renew and post it into your local CoCo, or go online and do it. For this you'll need your....renewal PIN........which of course...you didn't get it. So use the PIN recovery method.

    You have been told..........

Beware: the motortax.ie system may/may not issue a pin renewal - even if you do everything correctly, and you may need to do the form manually anyway.......

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

For the record, I got a renewal notice this morning for a car declared off the road last year - was able to re-declare it off the road in around 30 seconds on motortax.ie

Obviously I had the PIN, so I can't comment on whether it can be retrieved, but I can confirm that there there was a slip of paper included with the form, warning that the car needs to be re-declared before the end of the month before the tax is due (end of Aug in my case), or there will be back-tax due (3 months' minimum).

With the first two of mine, I was in the same boat as Type17. Reminders with PINs issued, and re-SORD'd online.

Need to root out the others and check when they're due though.

    A tip here...
When retrieving the pin number, you must put your name and address in the exact same format as on the documentation(even if its wrong), otherwise instead of telling you that you made an error, it will tell you the number does not exist.

I got my renewal notice last month.

I got neither PIN nor letter and had to leg it down to Wexford Co Co to do all the paperwork. I was four days late but managed to get a human being to talk it all through and didnt have to pay any back tax.

Mine arrived in the post today. Just did it online for another year.So far so good, I'm in the clear for another year.

However just reading the "important notice" enclosed with the renewal form it says if you don't make your declaration in time then you will be required to pay a minimum of three months tax and arrears if applicable. Does this mean they will make you tax an uninsured un-roadworthy heap of a "project" at the back of your garage? How can they issue you with a tax disc without details of an insurance policy?

if it's already a "classic" car that's SORD, do they plan to charge you one quarter of €56 for the 3 month's tax? You can't tax a classic for three months normally, just the flat rate €56 for 12 months.

I got my renewal notices through, some with PINs, some without. I renewed those with PINs immediately, I must get in to the office to do the others manually.

do they plan to charge you one quarter of €56 for the 3 month's tax?

3 months arrears would be €16.00

Arrears is €5.60 per month. (1/10 of the annual rate (disregard cent after multiplication))

I renewed one of my cars a month late last year :o, so had to pay €61

    €56 + 5.60 = €61.60 and the cent is disregarded = €61.

That's how they calculate it anyway. When/how/at what point they collect the money, I'm not sure.

It's a minimum of three months it says...In the case of a Classic that means you'd have to pay the twelve months..

Postman dropped a pile off Motor Tax Renewal Forms in the letter box this morning, for vehicles declared off the road and only 3 have pin's :mad::mad: Which I have renewed on-line straight away.

Now I cannot retrieve the Pin's for any of the others because it tells me:

    PIN Retrieval Unsuccessful
The tax on this vehicle expired more than three months ago. Your motor tax transaction must be completed through your local motor tax office.

What a load of boll@x !!! can't we do anything right ? More time wasted now printing forms, wasting printer ink, filling the forms and posting off.
A simple Pin is all than was needed, why do some reminders have Pin's and others not ?
Why don't the tax office add a section to the posted reminder form, so you can tick a box and post it back.

    OK Rant over :(

Do you mind me asking what was the procedure when you logged in using the pin you were sent?

We received form with pin for classic vehicle delclared off road since 2008 but when we log in using the pin it just directs to the regular renewal of tax disc page? There is no option of declaring it off the road?

We went as far as the page asking for insurance details but we don't have the ins details as it was last insured in 2008.

    Any help greatly appreciated :)

Got renewals in the post, so got them done asap. Online didn't work so just a trip to the tax office. The local tax office hates me :pac:

As far as I remember, once you've entered the reg and PIN, there is an option to Declare Off-Road situated below all the other info about proceeding to tax your car.

Edit: Just saw that you got sorted - hadn't seen the updates, due to a DNS issue here.

You don't have to enter your reg and PIN first.

    IT'S ON THE FRONT PAGE!!!

Click on the "click here" at the very bottom of the first page...

I've checked it just now, and it definitely hasn't moved. It's still on the front page.

    I'd say they do :P

Anyone else getting NCT reminder letters for cars declared off the road? Surely they shouldnt send them for SORNed cars./

I went down to the tax office yesterday with my renewals to SORD the last two cars which I had no PIN's for and I got my receipts.
This morning two more renewals arrive for the same two cars but with PIN's this time:rolleyes:
