I see I am not alone in this from looking on here but just wanted to post to warn people.
Advertised an item on gumtree last night. Got a response this am that seemed ligit. Replied and then got a very officious response telling me what would happen next. English seemed a little off. No interest in viewing the item which as it is a buggy, seemed weird. Wanted to pay by PayPal and would be sending a courier etc... Seemed too good to be true so I take it it is. Have junked the emails and will correspond no further.
The only personal info they have about me is my phone no and email address...can't do me much harm having those....or can they?

If you are certain its a scam, why not do some scam baiting. Tell them fine and when the courier arrives, send them an empty box.

Let them see how it feels.

    Have a read.

I like the idea but...I think I would like to have little to nothing to do with them.

You need to be very careful with scam bating. The person who is contacting you could easily live in the same city. Most people who are scambaiters do so with a full set up of fake name, dedicated phone no's and email addresses. They would not use their own personal contact details. Best to forget and move on

The best way around this is to insist on cash on collection... no paypal or Western Union or bankers draft.

If it is a scam you will have no reply. Meet the courier in a safe location away from your home and record any registration number of any vehicles.

You stay safe and get a sale that way if it is legit.

    TT

How do they scam Paypal? Pay you the money and then somehow reverse the transaction later ?
