hi folks, am looking to bring a bottle of whiskey with me to USA for a friend.

initially i was going to buy it in tesco and put it in my checked luggage but im afraid of it getting damaged and ruining my clothes so have been thinking about duty free but very confused.

    im flying dub-heathrow-sfo with virgin

so can i buy it in dublin duty free? or heathrow? is there limits on how much i can bring? (if its a lot cheaper at duty free i may buy a few bottles)

    thanks for the help

I bought a bottle on the same routing in Dublin Duty Free with no issues and they have a good range of brands. This: http://www.taxfreetravel.com/US%20Duty%20Free%20Allowances%20and%20Exemptions says 1litre only. Coming back iirc is 1 litre bottle only through Irish customs from non-EU.

If it's possible, I'd wait 'til you're in US & pick it up in a liquor store for less than Duty Free prices.

There's a 1 litre limit going in to the US. I think if you purchase it in Dublin duty free you will pay full price, you won't get the duty free price as the next leg of your journey remains in the EU. My advise is to get it in Heathrow, you will get it at the duty free price. I wouldn't risk bringing more than 1 litre as you may be checked at customs on the US side.

If you show the ticket showing the US as final destination, you get the Duty Free price in Dublin. It goes into a sealed security bag.

myself and brother travelled to green bay wisconsin a few years ago,(dublin-heathrow-chicago-greenbay) bought a bottle each in dublin, sealed in the airport bag etc,had no problem at heathrow, thenwhen we got to chicago and collected our bags to bring through customs for the final flight(greenbay) both bottles were confiscated, even after arguin about the sealed bag, receipts etc, they would'nt give them back- horrible waste of money,my advice is just buy it here and pack in luggage

You appear to have been unlucky. I declared mine in San Francisco and there was no problem.

What whiskey do you intend to bring? My expectation or be that LHR T3 would carry Jameson and Bushmills across a number of types plus maybe Tullamore Dew and some Powers but unlikely to get Paddy, Kilbeggans, Connemara etc.

was hoping to bring a litre of Tullamore dew but I was lookin at the heathrow website earlier and it wasnt on there (maybe they have more in the actual store than whats on the duty free site?)

No, Chicago is a bit special for connecting flights, basically you leave the terminal and go back into another one.

You get a few moments when you get off the plane to stick your duty free into your check in back and then you put it onto a belt to go to your next flight.

They don't explain anything so its easy to not realise after you put your bag on and just walk out.

In the end we just checked in our Carry on luggage for the second flight.
