Lane hogging

So, I was driving along the motorway at the speed limit of 120 kmh when I see a marked garda car in the overtaking lane doing about 110 while there was no other traffic around besides me. I stayed in the slow lane and ' undertook' him without going above 120 (I was on cruise control). The guard then pulled me over and warned me about undertaking. I told him that he was sitting in the fast lane at 110 and what was I supposed to do move into the fast lane and sit behind him until he decides to awake from his coma? Needless to say he didn't answer my question.
I then asked for his name so as to report him and he subsequently got scared.

It is apphauling that a professional driver could sit in the fast lane and then have the audacity to pull me in?

Just to get it out of the way, driving lane and overtaking lane. Best thing to do is move to the overtaking lane, flick on your right indicator and if that doesn't work, give a flash or two. You technically broke the law with the undertake, no laws would have been broken doing the above.

I thought the law permitted undertaking if there was at least a lane in between the two cars.

There's no law like that in Ireland.

You undertook a Cop car. Are you dense?

Actually considering the mess on the other two year old thread, I think the OP might be taking the pish here.

Flashing a Garda car, yeah that'll work.

    I smell a troll,

Don't see what they could pull you up on for giving a little flash? Aggressive driving? People always piss their pants when they see a Garda car on the motorway and the traffic slows right down to whatever the Garda car is doing and everyone's afraid to overtake even if they'll still be within the limit doing the overtake.

I'm sure they will think of something :pac:

Anyway, there is a traffic corp car I often see on the M50 late at night. Cruising in lane 3, then across 3 lanes to take an exit. Shameful stuff.

makes a change from the usual ford Fiesta hogging the traffic

I'll overtake a Garda car no problem, if I'm staying at or about the limit and they're on the left. Sitting behind them, flashing the lights to indicate you think they're doing something incorrectly is probably the fastest route to getting yourself pulled over and having everything on the car checked to the nth degree.

If I ever come across the situation I'll try it and report back :pac:

    Yes

While this thread is clearly looking for a reaction, I'll ignore the OP and talk to cormie.

Personally I wouldn't flash a Garda car even if they are in the overtaking lane.

And tbh I'll never overtake one again either!!

I overtook one on the m50 I was in the overtaking lane which was clear he was exiting at tallaght.
I was 100kph on the button he was a lot slower in his transit he cut back across the hash markings and pulled me in.

Saying I was speeding. As I flew past everyone else. Who wouldn't overtake him.
He was wanted to do me for careless driving.
    Bizarre incident, but true!

While there was no ticket issued I won't bother my arse overtaking one anymore. I'll gladly sit with all the other sheep, cause f**k knows what's going on in their heads!

So flashing them god only knows what response you'll get.

Thats a garda abusing their power... if im still driving legal, then id have no problem passing them, if they pull me in to make an issue, then ill demand proof, and their Number, im a law abiding citizen, but wont be intimidated.. thats whats wrong, people in authority given right of passage to abuse their position!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,848 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Yeah the risk is always there that you'll trigger a reaction like that, would make for interesting dash cam footage :)

In the UK, you can be fined for land hogging. About time it was brought in here.

The point is not to intimidate you, if you're driving legally (like me) they've got nothing to threaten you with.

The point is to waste your time, make you late, piss you off... so that you won't tangle with them next time.

....when I saw all lanes slow down to 80kph because a camera van was driving 85kph on the inside lane and all the people were afraid to overtake him.

I went into the outside lane did the legal 100kph and went on with my journey.

    No fuss. No probs.

Driving without due care and attention - it's already here.

But, like a lot of Irish laws, isn't enforced!

I'm going to put my hand up and admit I do undertake on the motorway when those inconsiderate f'ers driving under the speed limit won't pull in. But only at a last resort when patiently waiting and then driving up their arses hasn't worked. I overtake guards on the motorway too if I'm within the speed limit, don't see why not. Wouldn't do it on a normal road though.

    Another day, another nonsense thread.

This place is like the Joe Duffy show. Someone writes a thread to have a rant that serves zero purpose, and it descends into a farce.

    :(

Wouldn't bother me at all if they were holding up the show... I regularly cruise past marked squad cars on motorways without any reaction.

I've also had cause to have a go at a few of them:

    - Two idiots in an unmarked Mondeo who sat and watched as a boy racer mobile undertook them and myself and then forced its way in front of me, nearly taking the wing off.
I duly moved over to let them deal with it but.. nothing! Words were had at Newlands Cross with both the driver and his Sargent back in Cork

    - The asshat in a Mondeo estate who tried to get into my back seat on the N4 (before the free-flow days) while I was overtaking a line of traffic heading into Liffey Valley shopping centre.
Having watched him for a minute or two I gradually slowed right down to make the point. Cue flashing headlights etc. At the next set of lights he gets out and walks up to flash a badge and rant about me "hogging the fast lane" but soon backed off when I suggested he look up the Rules on tailgating and asked for his badge number and Super - fully prepared to call him there and then.

Most AGS cars I see are driven by clowns and sorry, but a badge and attitude does not gain my respect. If I'm in the wrong I'll take my punishment but I'll be damned if I take crap from some clown who thinks he's Dirty Harry.

Besides, if I recall right weren't they recently instructed that they have to follow all road regulations unless on an active call?
