Plastering a corner

Hi there, my friend recently bought a house and right inside the front door the plaster on the reveal is in bits. Due to paying for a house and wedding there is a major diy job being done in the house because of a lack of cash. He asked me to have a crack at plastering the reveal. There is no bead on the reveal, it's drywall corner tape and is not skimmed it's jointed with sheetrock. Now I have never used skim in my life but I have used sheetrock. My question is if I remove what's left of the tape and clean off any loose plaster can I then put on a bead ( he wants to used mini mesh corner beads) score the paint and give it a coat of pva and use sheet rock again or will the sheetrock never cling to the painted surface? The only reason I'm asking about sheetrock is I've used it before and know the result I can get with it. I'll probably make a complete balls of skim. I'd rather try it in my own house than someone else's. Any thoughts appreciated, thanks.
