first thinning

    hi all. what exactly is involved in first thinning 40 acres of 14 year old ss? if someone gives a few details i will ask more specific questions thanks.

    Check out who your local producer group are and ask your local Teagasc Advisor for some independent free information.
    Also check out if you can get a roading grant.

    lots to read there thanks. usually for first thinning does the owner pay the contractor or does the contractor do the work for the timber ?

    The contractor should pay the owner but u should get advice first about what it's worth and how the operation should be carried out. Again I recommend trying local forestry group.

    First thinning is intended to improve your crop.

    Get the wrong boyo in and it'll devalue your crop.

    Educate yourself, read the documents @Oldtree attached, join a growers group and ask around what contractors are reliable or come with references from similar guys to yourself.

    +1 advice, and make sure you are onsite as much as possible. You should get a docket for each load taken. I had some hauliers who did not put the dockets in the box when a load was taken and it makes it very hard to know how much is taken
