Looking at a car. I work normal office hours, so does the seller. So do mechanics.

So if I want a mechanic to look at the car, how does that work? I can't be the first person to have this problem

Have you asked any mechanics if they would be willing to meet outside of business hours or on a Saturday? I'd imagine a few would consider it if it was worth their while, given that they probably spend most of the regular day fixing cars and would not always have time to drop tools to go examine a car at time. Also not all mechanics work just business hours, I'd imagine some especially those working for themselves, put in longer stretches than that.

You could always get an AA car check : http://www.theaa.ie/AA/Vehicle-checks/Vehicle-Inspections.aspx

However I'd be terribly surprised if you couldn't get a local (recommended) mechanic to do it for less than 199 some evening

Good idea, will float the idea of a mechanic coming out/bringing it to one at the weekend or early next week after hours with the seller. I had a look at the AA thing where they come out but they charge €260 for it. Good grief! If something goes wrong it'd probably cost less than that to fix!
