How do I convince my parents to get Sky TV

My family are the only people in the town, who don't own a sky box! My dad's sceptical about the idea of getting sky, because he believes that we will be "scammed" by hidden charges. We have a technomate box right now, but that doesn't give us any good channels. It has some sky channels, but most of them are scrambled and have to be paid for, to unscramble. Can someone help me to convince my parents to get sky, and is it worth it?

I'd doubt if you're the only house in town that doesn't own a Sky box.

Maybe you should offer to pay the monthly sub.

Is it worth it? I my opinion no, I got rid of Sky about 10 years.

You won't be hit by hidden charges, but it is expensive imho.

Plus, their charges have been increasing year on year for quite a while now. And its only getting more expensive.

There's plenty of Sky customers out there, but the majority still don't have it.

Why do you want to convince your parents to get something they clearly don't want?

Sky is definitely NOT worth it. Something like 95% of viewing in sky households is of free to air channels.

Cheap UPC TV & Broadband package is the best you'll find. Around 60 a month is a lot better than what you'd pay with Sky.

What channels are you badly missing? You'll find your dad most likely gets all the channels "he" needs

I very much doubt you are the only people in the town without sky. so many people now are ditching sky and swtiching to free to air satalite or UK freesat.
As the previos poster said, would you not take out the sub if you want it? or do you know any friends with sky that would give you their sky ID to use the sky app to watch the main sky channel on?

It's been going to hell in a handcart for a few years. My advice is, don't bother with Sky's bullhockey and yet another bill coming into the house. Run a free-to-air box and check out Netflix. Oh and, read a good book now and then.

I'd bet those dishes you see up don't have all the channels on sky and if you have a half decent internet you can find more TV shows that sky actually show.

The OP appears to be located in Co. Donegal, do UPC offer any services there other than MMDS?

Simple really, offer to pay the subscription for him

Sky is not worth it, It was great back in the analogue days but things are far different now. Endless repeated crap, +1 channels, most of the good stuff is already free to air. If you can get Freeview through your aeriel in Donegal that will give you Filmfour, E4, all the UK terrestrial channels etc without buying anything.

Sky is only really needed if you are really into your sport and spend most of the weekend sitting on the couch watching football. Their movie channels are a joke showing movies that are at best 2 years old and massively overpriced. Many of the movies on Sky Movies currently being aired have been on repeat for the past 10 years or more.

Many tvshows on the sky network are available elsewhere for free on the internet, many on free to air channels. The music channels are all crap too, MTV stopped being good back in the late 90s, all your music needs are available for free and in much more quantity on Youtube and other streaming services.

Sky is well worth it if the programmes you watch are only broadcast on channels that aren't covered by saorview or on eh free satellite channels but it really comes down to what you want to watch.

So ignore everyone who says it either worth it or not worth it without finding out what programmes you like watching, instead do some research for your parents on potential shows they could get from having Sky and try and persuade them as nobody here is going to be able to convince your parents

If you want it that badly then why don't you get it yourself.

Sky is a rip off. They bundle in lots of crap if you want Sky Sports for example.

Also the Sky box you want so badly is a horrible restricted piece of rubbish.

Depending on what channels you're looking for, Sky can be pretty costly. Maybe your parents have enough bills and expenses every month without adding another one to it. Also if you're of school going age (which I'm guessing you are), they might not like the thoughts of you sat in front of the telly for hours on end instead of studying or doing other more constructive things.

Maybe his reason is a nice way of saying 'we can't afford it' ?

If you want it so much why don't you pay for it yourself?

Blindingly obvious really. The old man doesn't want it, the OP does. If the OP pays the sub, everybody's happy.

Maybe you should list exactly what you are missing, want badly, and can only be got from Sky?

I suggest you do this exercise and post your info here for comment.

You might even find there are alternative sources for what you want.
