Doesn't matter which end of the month you do it. There may be some theoretical saving to be had by hanging on to your money until later in the month, but somehow I doubt it! :D

unless you declared it off the road in advance, then you owe the 2 months.

If it is declared off the road already, then tax at the beginning of the month. So if you were gonna drive it again on say the 28th of a month, I'd wait to tax it at the start of the following month.

well there's only a saving if you are starting to drive at the end of a month. In that case, I'd wait a few days and tax it from the start of the next month as there would be no point paying tax for an entire month when there's only a few days to run in the month.

But as it's just the 7th today, you may as well tax it from today onwards.

Ah in that case, no savings at all.

When you're in the last month of tax, you can declare it off the road for up to 12 months. If at any stage in that 12 months, you need to tax the car, you just tax it as normal and get the disc.

If you aren't worried about putting extra owners on the car then sign it over to a family member and "buy" it back again. You wont owe any back tax then.

^^ Another option. Only thing is being without the logbook for a few days / weeks. If stopped at a checkpoint, it'll be down to the guards discretion. If being the operative word there. ;)
