Flights to New York

Thinking of heading to New York for a 5 day birthday treat next Summer. I am not a great flyer (used to love it but had a bad experience). What airlines would you recommend travelling with? I want to go direct from Dublin/Shannon.

Delta / United for me. Not a fan of Aer Lingus at all.

    +1 for Delta or United.

Delta's product has improved no end these past few years, whereas in my experience, Aer Lingus have gone the other direction unfortunately. In the recent row over rostering at EI, one of the cabin crews gripes was that staff with a preference for working short-haul were being rostered on transatlantic services and vice-versa.

That may go some way to explaining why a fair few members of their crew habitually appear somewhat surly, disengaged and lacking in personality - a real shame, as the genuine warmth of the staff was traditionally a real strong-point of the airline.

United are a thumbs down for me, Old planes, delays due to technical problems being common.

    Delta are pretty good imo.

    United is my personal favourite

If you're close enough to Shannon there's lots of choice there in summer- United to Newark and Aer Lingus + Delta to JFK.

Do Delta use 767s or 757s?

Depends on the flight. Last winter I flew out on a 757, flying back the plane was changed for a 767. I assumed it was due to demand.

Delta all the way...agree with the other comments on Aer Lingus. Never again will I fly them Transatlantic!!

Delta use 767s during peak travel months and 757s off peak. As you're travelling in the summer it should be a 767.

Would much rather Delta over Aer lingus. Have always had the little tv's with delta but never with Aer lingus. Also the threat of strike with Aer lingus usually sends me running a mile from using them where possible.

All Aer Lingus A330's + 757's have the personal TV's these days

I'd have gone for the other way around, but it's probably 5 or 6 years since I tried Delta. United has the personal TV screens, and the Economy Premium if you're tall. It costs a bit extra, but you get a decent amount of legroom. A quick google shows that Delta now have Economy Comfort which looks similar (possibly even a little better) - does anyone know if that's on all Delta flights from Dublin?

I fly to New York regularly and on occasion have had the misfortune of being stuck with United.
Next time it comes to that I will chance swimming.
    Delta are great though.

From SNN, Delta is a 757 and from DUB its a 763 or 764 all year apart from a few weeks in Sep/Oct and April mainly.

US airways are the Ryan air of America . Yes they are cheapest but it is hit and miss with them in my experience . Delta / Virgin / British airways are by far superior.

Not really! More the Aer Lingus of America. Surely Spirit / Allegiant would be the Ryanair :D?

I've flown transatlantic 3 times with Aer Lingus and once with Delta. I found both of them good and wouldn't hesitate to use either of them again. I've only flown United on an internal flight in the US, it wasn't awful but it wasn't exactly great either.
