New Driving Licence, couple of questions

Thinking of getting my old paper licence replaced with the new credit card type but there are a couple of things I'm not sure about.

    1. I have my current licence since 2008 so technically it will be valid until 2018. I read somewhere that if I apply for a new licence I will not be eligible for the credit card type, only a replacement paper one like the one I have now. I will only be eligible for a credit card type one when my current paper one expires - is this true?

    2. The website states that a replacement licence costs €35 (usual rip-off) but I read on another site that if I just want to change the details on my licence to state that I'm an organ donor then there will be no charge - is this true?

There are no more paper licences issued since NDLS took over the system. You'll get a credit card one.

Almost. If you want to add organ donor to your current licence, they'll point you to the checkbox at the bottom on the back page. However, if you subsequently change your mind and no longer wish to be an organ donor, a new licence will have to be issued.

You could also get an endorsement added to your licence, and you'll get a new CC licence for free. With the money you'd save by being uninsurable, you might actually make a profit :pac:

As above, if you request organ donor they will simply tick the back of your paper licence. Most people are simply 'losing' their paper licence or sticking it in the washing machine. That privilege will cost you €35 and will require a Garda stamped application form. However, if you amend the address (add the house name etc) or change your name (use the version on your birth cert or passport) then you can get a free plastic replacement. I simply used my Irish spelling as on my passport and added my middle name. Worked a treat.

Nope, they changed that loophole because everyone was using it. That now counts as a change to the license and will cost you €35.

And yes, the free replacement only applies where the applicant already has a plastic licence and wants to add/remove the organ donor notation (115) to the reverse of the licence.

So it's free to change my address, but I have to pay to opt out of organ donation? Bit mad really. Especially when it's seemingly free if you want it removed from a CC licence.

Presume if you ask for a change of address, the new licence is valid as long as the previous one?
