There is not much you can do except try yourself to change the negative to positive. It happened to me too once, I booked a secret hotel with an excellent price and then got to read the reviews. TBH, mostly things are never usually as bad as people make out. The three worst things in a hotel could be:

1 : 40 degrees outside and no air con. Hopefully this will not be the case, and I guess this is unlikely.

2 : Hotel is dirty. Not much you can do about that. Anyhow, many of the reviews are a little exaggerated at times. Never really seen a dirty hotel from top to bottom.

    3. Noise> Now, you can sometimes do something about this. Make sure to bring good ear plugs.

I have seen people complaining on hotel reviews about ridicules things like the "lift was too slow", there was a hair in the bathroom, the towels were too small and so on. Just try and make the best and warn the others too - things are never really that bad. Aren't we dam lucky to be travelling.

Reviews can really vary. People book a cheap 3 Star deal and the expect to get 4-5 star accommodation.

You booked and paid for a hotel, then you read the reviews, then you registered on boards to complain.

What can you do? Next time try the process in reverse.

Agreed... Complete madness.. What exactly do you expect back in terms of advise... About a none refundable deal ? Seriously ?

On a practical note, you could stay in the hotel and plan to get the hotel to fix the flaws immediately once you arrive. But this entirely depends on the nature of complaints. And I have sometimes found that many negative comments on places are the result of people setting their expectations way too high. I've mostly found this in the case of Americans visiting Europe who have some romantic vision of everything and when reality doesn't match their imagination, they let rip, unjustifiably. Often, it's about restaurants - they go to good, decent, popular local restaurants and then complain because it isn't Michelin Star standard, or they just don't accept that different countries have different culinary and table-waiting styles ...

Is your opinion of the hotel based solely on online reviews or have you actually known someone who stayed there?

I have stayed in places that had terrible online reviews but turned out to be fine when I got there. I think there are many keyboard warriors who review hotels.

I've stayed in the Copthorne Tara Hotel in Kensignton London on a number of occasions and it's a very nice hotel, yet it only scores a 3.8 on Tripadvisor, while that's not terrible it's not great either but reading some of the poor reviews I really think people have mad expectations.

Anyway, as stated there's nothing you can do except book somewhere else if you've loads of money.

Read the other reviews that those people have given, if they are all negative then you needn't be too worried I'd say.
Don't stress too much about it.
Couple of places I've stayed in had bad reviews on trip advisor but when I got there no problem.
Don't stick to one site for reviews either.

Contact the hotel and say you are really worried about the bad reviews and has anything been done to rectify the issues. They might put you in one of their better rooms.
