My s3 just displays samsung boot screen but wont go any further.
Im just this evening learning about fixing this.
The phone will go into 2 different modes if i hold the volume home and power buttons.
From reading online it seems if i download new firmware all should be well.
Its looking like a 950mb download and would take me forever.
Am i on the right track and can the firmware be git on disc to save the download?

No cannot be got on a disc. You'll have to download it and put it on your SD card.
Then flash it onto the phone.

950mb seems massive though. ROM's are usually around 3-400mb.

Have you a nandroid backup from recently?

If so restore it from recovery mode.

It's not odd for some custom roms to be this big I remember downloading ones for this phone at least a gig.

As long as he can still get the phone into recovery mode it's not bricked.

Ive cleared cache etc and done a factory reset. Have most photos etc backed up
    still no good.
Ive downloaded odin to laptop and as i understand it i can send the new rom from there once the phone enters downloading mode which it will do.
I have not a hope of downloading 900mb with my bb speed though.

900 mb even on a .5mb connection would be done in a night.

Where you based, I'm sure if you give a link aswell someone can download and burn to cd for you.

Usb would be quicker. Ive had issues installing things the wrong way etc and been in similar position where i couldnt get by the boot screen.

Once u can still get into recovery mode there should be a fix.

Is your phone rooted? What rom is currently on the phone? Is there not a current copy of the rom your running on your internal or external sd card?

If u get hold of the rom u want to run just google how to flash it.

Its running the latest update from vodafone.
    Phone has not been rooted.
There is no option to install from internal memory that i can see.
    The options are;
    Reboot now
    update from adb
    Update from external storage
    wipe data/ factory reset
    wipe cache
    apply update from cache

Bring it into the shop so. If was rooted they wouldn't help you they will now though.
