PS3 Hard drive problem

Unfortunately it looks as if my PS3 hard drive has stopped working. It kept freezing while trying to do a restore so I had to go to safe mode and do a full restore by choosing the Restore PS3 System option. This solved the problem for a day until the next time I turned on the PS3 the main menu wouldn't load. I had to do a forced restart and I was back to square one again as it got stuck trying to restore.

I assume my hard drive is too badly corrupted and I need a new one.

Can someone please recommend a cheap hard drive that is proven to work with the PS3? Thanks

What size are you thinking?

You want Serial ATA or SATA, 2.5 inch. After that it's size.

I normally get Western Digital but all do the same job.

Some people will say to go for the faster spin speed 7200 rpm but others say to stick with 5400 rpm as the ps3 was designed for. ( other stories of overheating with the faster 7200)

I normally use Elara as it's near my job and it's €0.01 to collect.

Cheers, I just wanted to make sure that whatever one I got was definitely compatible. I've had WD drives before and never had any problems. I'll check out elara.

Quick question - buying a PS3 for the kids (need to keep spend to a minimum) - am I therefore better off buying one of the 12Gb PS3's (€189) and then putting in a 1Tb disk ?

Yes you would !!

As I have Playstation Plus since it began around July 2010 I have received 4 or more games a month, so hard drive is filling up.

So that's €50 for the year.
