Reference for someone i dont know for Irish residency

    Hi All
    I started a job earlier this year in a very small company. After 2 weeks i was asked by a co-worker (from the Philippines) could he use me as a reference for his residency and asked me for my details. I was kind of put in a spot and felt I had to agree as I didn’t want to make an enemies in the new job. I agreed and signed the forms and gave my details.
    After another week he handed in his notice and left for a few months to travel with some bullsh1t story that him and his wife needed to travel home etc… very fishy.
    He then arrived back into Ireland and started working cash in hand with the company again. The company was very dodgy and I have since left after many the run in with the owner.
    I am looking for some advice as to who I can report this behaviour to and also take my name and details off his residency application.
    As I said I have have major problems with this employer but I want to start off with the first.

    This is a little bit confusing. Do I understand correctly?

    1. You want to report the Filipino to the tax office for working cash-in-hand?
    2. You no longer wish to be used as a reference on the Filipino's residency application?

    You won't like my advice, but I think at this stage you should just mind your own business and get on with your life. Holding grudges like this are unhealthy and won't make you happy.

    Don't worry too much about the residency reference. If you're contacted you can just say that you knew the guy for three weeks before he left and went back to the Phillippines. Him being granted residency won't hinge on your reference.

    You can report the employer to Revenue and/or INIS that you suspect he's employing illegal immigrants cash-in-hand.

    Thanks, thats very true about holding grudges but i dont think that the company should get away with this. I was the only one in the office that had a contract and he treated people like sh1t.

    You could inform the Dept of Justice. They deal with foreign residents who want to apply for Naturalisation.

    No. You have no evidence of any use except for some hearsay and rumour.

    Revenue themselves if they wish to act on your tip-off will make a visit to the business and ask to look at their books and their employees. Then any evidence they gather will be used against the company.

Your name will be co-opted onto his permit, I recall signing for one some years ago and in the small print it stated that I would give accommodation & assist in times of medical and financial need... I would regiister the letter and state the circumstances and formally withdraw your name to his. You can state additional concerns if you wish , but feeling obliged to underwrite a stranger because of work pressures.. I'd be insisting on an acknowledgement in writing from the department or agencies ; ; it's serious stuff.

    If the person the OP knew is apply for nautralisation (which is what i presume they mean by 'residency') then what you have stated above is not true. I have recently gone through the nautralisation process. The application form simply asks for the referees name, nationality, address, dob, phone, signature and length of time that they have known the applicant. I imagine the DOJ would not look favourably on an application where the referee has said they have only known the applicant for 3 weeks and further investigations and background checks would be done.

    Even work permit applications do not state that the referee would give accomodation, financial help etc in times of need....of so, no one would sign them.

    Two totally different things. And maybe different criteria - I know I had to sign for medical & financial need & to agree to underwright them.

    As regards the other I dont know the terms, but if any kind of scrutiny is applied re housing, contracts, leases, or staying in state supported ( ie taxpayer paid for) houses without declaring or having permission for the extra person to be there ( like council property which require a lease agreement oer person) or rent allowance properties you could be in even more deep water that misrepresenting the truth on a signed affidavit. personally I would never do it again; partucularly with all the new data protection and FOI reaources - you'd never know who would end up with the data or what the financual, tax, or penalty outcome would be down the road. As regarding being pressurised by work to do it I would make that declaration .
