Do you mean that a springer is preferred or a trained retriever dog?

I doubt you'd be able to buy a trained dog at this stage. Could your friend borrow/rent a dog for the period required?

Btw - we used to have a Labrador who was a brilliant retriever. Then we had a Cocker Spaniel (a gay one) who was afraid of the sound of a gun! Ran home with its tail between its legs at the first shot lmao.

My Dad trains dogs but there was nothing he could do with Benjamin lmao. Of course I was blamed for turning the dog 'gay'. Hee hee..

Ah, I'm going off topic - my Dad claimed I had made an eegit out of the dog by not treating him like a dog lol. It was my fault that the dog was afraid of the gun you see and ran home to me lol. Well trained dogs are expensive creatures. I'll bow out of taking over your thread now though. I just find dog-training fascinating!

no worries you not taking over my thread at all that's what the forum is all about we can get the answers and have a bit of a slag at the same time

I have 5 springers myself 4 still working and 1 retired that's why he asked but I have a golden rule with my dogs I never lend them to anybody had a bad experience years ago where a so called good friend nearly fcuked up a good dog of mine

That would be understandable. My Dad mainly trains his own sheep-dogs. His dogs adore him. He managed to train the lab though for retrieval. I can't imagine that you could train a dog to work for someone else either unless you got them just recently trained as pups. They are very loyal!

even though I would say all my dogs are steady and well used to shooting at this stage its a chance im never again prepared to take

I don't know what liberties they would chance with a stranger and all of a sudden I have a dog with a bad habit its a lot easier to give a dog a habit than break them of it

By that token, anyone wishing to use a dog would be hard pressed to get even a trained dog to work for them! I know my Dad's dogs wouldn't be able to work for anyone else, even if a new owner was trained in the commands? Maybe it's the way Dad trains them! I know that over the years my Dad will buy a pup off a well trained dog, but would never buy a trained dog?
