So, I'm over in Cambodia at the moment. Lovely country. Was being driven along in a tuk tuk today on the way to a temple , and we were driving parallel to a canal. Very brown water. Goes for miles. There's a bank on the edge and a drop of about 4 foot into the water.

So anyways, one of the most random things I've ever seen.

There's an oul fella, about 60, and he's got a bamboo pole fishing rod, long string tied on to...a duck.

Yup, a live duck, string tied around its wings.

The duck was being bobbed up and down in the water, just it's feet in to the water and then being bobbed back out of the water again.

I got to look for about 10 seconds.....

Was he fishing with a duck? With it's feet as bait? Was he teaching it to swim? Was he insane?

    All theories welcome

Duck dives into water to catch fish, comes out - man takes fish out of duck's mouth.

    Rinse and repeat.

    Known as cormorant fishing.

String tied tightly around throat so the bird can't swallow the fish... Pretty cruel looking.

Just when I think I'd heard all the ways people were dicks to animals, along comes another thing I hadn't heard of.

    Feck sake :(

Tourist: "How many have you caught?"

Duck man: "You're the third, so far today".

A cormorant is not a duck!

    Asia is great.

I was once on the bus in Beijing when I saw a man lifting his daughter up, pull down her underwear and hold her over the bin where the child started taking a ****. Note that the bin was on same bus as me.

Clearly the duck/comorant was talking his pet man for a walk . As we all know ducks etc have no hands and like to swim , so its easier for him to keep.the man on a leash/bamboo pole thingy attached to bis neck.

    Ok it wasn't cormorant fishing.

It wasn't a cormorant. And the duck wasn't even being submerged, just bobbed up and down. And the rope wasn't around his neck, it was around his middle.

Looked for all the world he was teaching the duck to swim!

I thought about the bait thing?

But he hardly had hooks in the ducks feet

So have I, but I didn't observe the aforementioned phenomenon (fortunately).

Saw a guy with his trousers and underwear pulled down, humping the pavement on 5th Avenue New York.

I've seen many cormorants. It wasn't a cormorant

They can even train otters to catch fish for people!

He was Duck fishing something the Cambodians have copied from the Veitnamese (who by all accounts are better at it) the duck is in a sort of harness - so there aren't hooks in the bird itself.

From a google search btw. Travel yourself interesting my ar*e!

    Google link?

You sure you didn't mix it up with DUCKLING fishing?

This was a fully grown duck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,737 ✭✭✭✭kylith

Probably fishing for predatory fish, or crocodiles. Predator eats duck, man eats predator. I've heard of something similar with frogs or ducklings to catch pike.

I did say they're not very good at it - yes duckling should be used.

I could attach link but it's easy to find. But you are there why don't you ask a local?
