I am 18 and have a golf van and will try to get insured on it with my father , I am hoping he can get insured on it as a work vehicle ( second car ) and I would be able to also get insured on it on his policy as a named driver / employee . I would like to find out is this possible at my age and if it would be expensive ? I'll have a full license at this stage . any advice or help would be appreciated thanks !

No doubt this could be done, but you'll (or he'll) have to sign a declaration that it will only be used for commercial purposes

If you own the vehicle, like you say, you will have to transfer ownership to your father (or his business, depending on whose name the policy is in). Be aware that the only purpose you can use the vehicle is "use in connection with the insured's business as described in the schedule" and private use. You cannot use it for any other commercial activity.

Private use can be a bit of a grey area. I've heard of a van being confiscated and towed as it was being brought to town to do the shopping which as the guard said was not for commercial purposes.

you can't use it privately at all

Private use is a tax issue, not insurance usually. Many commercial motor policies specifically state for social, domestic and pleasure as well as in connection with the insured's business. You are insured to be out on private use, but evading tax instead.

Have you ever actually insured a commercial vehicle before? You DO NOT have to sign anything to say it is used purely for commercial purposes. And ever commercial policy I've had so far, has covered me for both private and commercial use.

And to answer your question OP. Yes you can insure it as a company vehicle and ad yourself as a named diver (Van may need to be registered in the companies name though). Generally commercial policies will cover any employee over 25, and anyone under must be named but can be expensive with some companies.

Brokers are very useful here and helped me get on 3.2L Pajero when I was 18 for very little extra.

    .

I wasn't suggesting that you would, nevertheless a declaration will have to be signed before the vehicle is legally on the road.

When taxing a commercial vehicle for the first time after you have bought it you need to go to the garda station and have them co sign a declaration that you are using the vehicle for commercial purposes only. Included in this must be either your VAT number for the company or your PPS number for a sole trader and the purpose of your business. You CANNOT tax it commercially without this declaration. I've bought 2 vans in the last year and had to do this both times. Once you sign it once for any vehicle, it does not have to be done again until ownership is changed over. However I will say that there is no real scrutiny on this form when you go to the garda station. They just stamp it and send you on your way.
