Large family car, relilable, diesel, fuel efficient,

2011 and around E15k to spend

    So its probobly one of

    Avensis
    Passat
    Octavia
    Mondeo

Which 1? and which spec/engine to go for?

(this will be moved to the buying subforum I assume)

Why not think a little outside the box? The four you listed are pretty common on the roads these days. 15k is a not insignificant chunk of change. Why not spend it on something a little more interesting??

Also, of the four cars you list, the octavia is in a class below the others.

Accord? Likely to get a much better spec although you would probably need to drop a year to fit the budget though.
Have to admit I a biased though as I drive one.

OK for just maybe 1 or 2 more you could get a 142 Dacia Duster 2WD... Not sure of the exact price it might be 18. But figure a 131 should be a k or 2 less...

What would be thinking outside the box?
    Saab? Volvo?

You can buy number plates from a motor factors.
No reason whatsoever for anyone to buy a bloody Dacia. Seriously.

That post must be the worst "reccomend me a car" response I've ever seen in this forum. Are you being ironic?

Something like a volvo could be, yes.
I just know if I were buying a car for 15k I would want something a lot nicer than the crappy repmobiles that tom dick and harry already have down the road.

Accord would be a bit more rare I suppose.

Mazda 6? Nice looking motor too, like the Accord.

We don't know enough about the OP's exact circumstances but generally when they are looking for a family car it is for a family to use.
This usually means a number of kids of unknown ages (at this point).
Those "bog standard" rep mobiles, stand up to a lot of abuse, are generally roomy and come with hatchback as an option (might be important depending on the use of buggys, lots of boot space/requirement etc)
Also, and I suppose this is the kicker, kids can damage and seriously dirty cars. I'd rather they did that to a bogstandard repmobile than my pride and joy.
I'm not entirely clued up on service/parts costs but I would reckon that the more common cars might work out cheaper on this side of things in the long run.
Tom, Dick and Harry down the road probably have the car for a reason......

For the record OP, I'd recommend a Mondeo. Nice to drive, roomy, economical, lots of boot space etc etc.......
Dont get me wrong, I'd love an accord but I'd hate to see it get destroyed!

Some good points raised there, I have 2 kids myself and although I use the car mainly for work purposes, the kids would be in the back at weekends. Mine has part leather so keeping it clean would be a concern but its easy to pop covers on the back seats if necessary.

The wife has a diesel focus which hasn't given a days trouble yet (touch wood) so the Mondeo could be a reliable option provided proper maintenance regime was followed. There is no comparison between driving the Accord and Focus though!

No buggies:D:D Juat 3 teenagers - dont know which is worse tho..

A common rep type car that keeps going dosent bother me

Any volvo/saab/honda with average milage seem to be more expensive that the mondeo/avensis/passat

    Couple of other questions
Whats considered high milage for a 2011 car?

I n the mondeo range whats best engine to go for and whats the best spec?

2.0 TDCi is the best engine and Zetec trim should have everything you really need.

Depends on how high you are willing to go, the higher the mileage, generally the cheaper the car. Personally I wouldn't be going over 80 - 85 thousand miles, but that's just me. Diesel cars (if that's what you are going for) do high mileage no bother and at 80k are only broken in.

As said the 2.0 is the best engine although the 1.6 isn't dire, I've been in one or two and they surprised me. Titanium or Titanium X are the ideal specs if you want your toys, but the Zetec has their fair share. Just make sure if you get a Zetec to get one with the upgraded 17" alloys, some have the 16's as on the edge spec, but the 17's make the world of difference. Also get one with the DRL's, look better IMO, that black space at the front on ones without them sticks out for me anyway. Just stay away from the bog spec edge/lx

with 3 older kids, I wouldn't overlook a skoda superb - huge amount of space in the back, and very handy for odd sized loads with the trick rear door thing.

good range of engines, and several levels of trim

Yes I had a 2010 Superb TDI, and can fully reccommend them for space. Just don't get the 1.9 tdi model, go for a 2.0 tdi, better bhp and torque in these engines. The 1.9 TDI I had was 105 bhp and in that size/weight of car it was severely underpowered. I'd say DSG 'box would be welcomed also.

Best rear legroom/space and boot space I've had in a car, and that's including a 7 series e65 LWB that I had a loan of.
