Art History and History courses

I wonder if anyone can help me. At the age of 47, I have been reevaluating my life. I work part time in an office which I hate but as the only breadwinner I cannot afford to give it up. I asked myself what would I really like to do and I know I love history and art history. So I've decided to go back to school.

I completed my leaving cert in 1984 which included honours history. Unfortunately I never had the option to do art in my school. I am not interested in the art part just the history of art.

My goal is to get a degree in either or both history and history of art but I don't know how to go about it. I would appreciate any advice. I'm quite prepared to start at leaving cert level but only in these two subjects. Many thanks.

You could do them both as part of the DN500 Arts course in UCD.

You can access said course as a mature with Leaving Cert results, by taking the MSAP exam or can apply using them both to maximize your chances. There's also the UCD Access program, with offers guaranteed entry to their desired degree program once they achieve over, I believe, 60% in their results.

Of course, might be redundant if you're not based in Dublin.

If you can't afford to give up your job to study full time you could do a BA in Humanities to include Art History and History modules with the Open University part-time

I am going to UCD this September to do the Access course - subjects I chose were English Lit and History (although also interested in Archaeology but the way they fell I couldn't so..). Hoping to do the Joint Honours Degree in UCD afterward in English Lit and History with some minors in Archaeology, Art History and a Language if possible. I think the Access course is a great resource. It gets you back into learning, helps with study skills etc, You can do subjects that interest you and then if you achieve over 60% in the course you get a guaranteed offer to the Degree course in UCD :)
