First-Time Nintendo 2DS/3DS owner.

Technically this is the second time I've ever owned a Nintendo console. I have a Gamecube which I bought 2 years ago.... but I only bought it for Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes......... which I've yet to buy (very expensive).

    Moving on.

I got a 2DS today and I'm still getting the hang of the menus and features (Miis etc.). Adding a friend was weird, I had no idea that you had to exchange a 12-digit code to each other. Again, weird, but pretty unique.

There are many other features on the console I haven't touched yet, it's all pretty confusing at the moment but I'll get there.

Since I'm finally an owner of the 2DS (3DS) I'm on the lookout for what games out there are a must-buy for the system.

Currently, I own Pokémon Y. It was fair pricey, even pre-owned (€40) but I swallowed it and paid for it. Loving it so far.

I heard a lot of bad things about the 2DS before I decided to get one, but even those complaints are merely based towards its look, which I didn't care about, and was goaded into saving up money for a 3DS XL which is just way out of my budget. So the 2DS was a perfect choice for the likes of me, who just wants to play 3DS games about now.

    Back to my question. I'm currently looking into getting;

    New Super Mario Bros. 2
    Mario Kart (7?)
    and maybe Monster Hunter 3

but are there any other big titles out there I should give a go on?

Super Mario 3D Land and Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds are two that spring to mind, excellent they are.

    Check Metacritic:

You have a backlog of DS games to get through too (I envy you playing some of these for the first time)

Have to second the recommendation for Super Mario 3D Land. It really is a great game.

When I first got it I didn't immediately fall in love with it -didn't do the special world or anything.

Started playing again recently and can't put it down. Even going back and getting all the coins and yellow flags is a pleasure. Normally I wouldn't bother but it's well worth the effort with this title.

Fire Emblem Awakening is great as well if you're into turn based/strategy RPG's.

As others have said, Super Mario 3D Land is a must.

New Super Mario Bros 2 is the worst of the New SMB series (the Wii U one is the best), but if you haven't played any of the others you might enjoy it.

Zelda A Link Between Worlds is great

If you never played the original on the N64, Zelda Ocarina of Time is brilliant.

Fire Emblem Awakening is what I'm currently playing on my 3ds, very good game if you like turn based strategy.

Mario and Luigi Dream Team Bros is a very good RPG (imo).

Luigi's Mansion is a great sequel

If you never played the Wii version, Donkey Kong Country Returns

If you like puzzle games, have a look at the Professor Layton series.

Fire Emblem is amazing. Super Mario 3D Land, Zelda Link between Worlds, Mario & Luigi, Mario Kart, Star Fox should be fairly cheap, Ocarina of Time if you've never played it, Luigi' Mansion. There's loads more. There's also eshop games like Pullblox. And there's a pile of amazing DS games also.

    Paper mario

I gave this another go over the weekend. I think it's very poor. Travesty to follow up Paper Mario 64 and Thousand Year Door with that.

Be careful them there 2DS are fragile, :(

Pokemon Black and White are €10 each in Argos, pick them up, they're awesome.

Ah, I'm not going to play through a game with an Faq beside me.

I got so frustrated with that game's use of "things". Playing the game and seeing that I need a fishhook, now where is the fishhook hidden in the game? No clue given. When you find the fishhook, you have to then travel to some place to stickerise it, then travel back to where you wanted to use it. You never know when you're going to need a certain item, so even if you found it already you can't just carry around sticker versions of them all since you have limited space so you have to travel back and forth a lot. The bosses; lack of clues given before bosses into what "thing" you need in sticker form. There might be a clue while you fight them but what good is that? I have to leave the battle, get the item, travel to the place to get a sticker, then travel all the way back to the battle. You also have the lack of any levelling up so battling any of the enemies is completely pointless and just a waste of time.

I was so excited for that game when I first saw it announced, I loved Paper Mario 64 and Thousand Year Door. I even enjoyed Super Paper Mario to a degree. When I first saw Sticker Star, I saw a return to turn based battling, couldn't wait for the game. Then I played it. Disappointed doesn't describe my feelings strong enough. I made it to World 4 before I gave up. Very unusual for me to dislike a game with Mario in the title, especially an RPG Mario game (Mario & Luigi titles are brilliant). If it ever appears on my "What games have you completed?" list, it will just be because I don't like having a Mario game I haven't completed.

That reply ended up a lot longer than I had originally intended :)

The Mario and Luigi titles on the GBA and DS kinda took up the mantle of N64 Paper Mario title.
Also worth getting is Super Mario RPG, isn't it available on the virtual console or E shop?
It's the predecessor to Paper Mario.

    The absolute essentials:

Fire Emblem. (If you don't think you like this genre, this will change your mind)
    Zelda OoT 3D
    Zelda ALBW
    Mario 3D Land
    Steamworld Dig (eshop)
    Cave Story (eshop)
    Pushmo/Pullblox (eshop)
    Shovel Knight (eshop soon)
    Chrono Trigger (DS)
    Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS)

Very good but you could survive without playing:

    Resident Evil Revelations
    Bravely Default
    Mario Kart 7
    New Super Mario Bros 2
    Kid Icarus
    Tales Of The Abyss
    Animal Crossing
    Zelda: Spirit Tracks (DS)

One game not mentioned here is Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. It's a great turn based strategy game. May be bought in the eShop for less than €20.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

It's grand, but there are 2 problems with it on the eShop
    1. €20 is way over the market price. Tesco had - and in some cases still have - it for €5 on cartridge for example.
    2. It's a good game, but in it's heyday there was no competition. Now it's up against the superb Fire Emblem. It's like comparing a puddle to the mariana trench in terms of depth. It'd be like going to a swingers party on Ramsey street back in the 80s and pulling Madge but seeing all your mates twirling Helen's car keys around their finger as they head upstairs. It takes all the fun out of it.

Well done on the analogy, funny.

Point 2 isn't really valid though.

I am not a huge rpg fan so fire emblem is much less interesting to me, and possibly others, than a turn based strategy game.

Fire Emblem *IS* a turn based strategy game
Take away the guns and really there's only 1 difference between them :

Shadow War picks your squad, gives you characters with predefined roles and while they can earn XP in those roles their progression boils down to "if they don't survive the round your progress is held back". It's been a while but as far as I remember your squad is also quite limited so choosing who's going to go on a particular mission is barely even a choice.

FE:A on the other hand does give you the same on-rails approach to giving you members for the team (to a point) but there are tonnes of them, so you have plenty of choice when it comes to how you will approach a fight. You can spec them out any way you like, in terms of load out, role and progression. Who you put them with becomes as important as where you put them once Relationship buffs start coming into it. And then when the 2nd generation of characters comes along you have a massive amount of control (or, if you didn't know it was coming, influence rather than control :)) over what kinds of warrior will make up your army.

There are RPG elements in FE:A, sure, but they're there to make the turn-based strategy battles more interesting and diverse, not to distract you or provide an alternative game mode.

Edit: that's not really a difference. It's less Chalk vs Cheese than Easy Singles vs a mature cheddar.
Don't get me wrong, TC'sGR:SW is a great game, and if you see it cheap in Tesco you owe it to your 3DS to try it. But it's very definitely second best.

Alright you have me convinced! Still think the neighbours analogy was better than the cheese one though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

In my defence, Madge was (for the lengthy period between Fred and Harold) a fairly easy single. And Helen was a very mature cheddar... Not sure if it's still up there but there was an eShop Fire Emblem : Awakenings demo - it doesn't let you toy with the relationship mechanics as there are only 2 or 3 fights, but you get to try out a couple of unit types and get a flavour of the overblown story.

Ghost Recon is a turn based Rogue type strategy game, but a very different beast to Fire Emblem no?
Not dissimilar to the difference between Xcom and Advance Wars, I would have believed.

That's what I thought but his Australian soap/ dairy product examples persuaded me otherwise.

    Hmm,
    I see what you mean.
Still think he's wrong though, but that's just like my opinion man
