Dont, would be my advice, unless you are planning on getting a properly fitted and calibrated HID kit (which wont pass the NCT unless it has washers and a levelling system). They might look nice to you, but badly fitted HIDs are a menace on the road.

Cheap HID kits will scatter the light and when fitted to reflector type headlights which I think the Golf has, you will blind oncoming traffic. There are already enough idiots out there doing this as it is.

So imo either fit a proper HID kit or stick to standard halogen bulbs.

    Buy blue halogen bulbs.

They'll never be as bright as clear bulbs but at least you'll be happy with the look.

Can anyone recommend me bulbs that are legal and roadworthy?

These will have the best output out of anything you can put in the reflectors. Anything that isn't a halogen bulb will have less usable output than a standard 55 W halogen bulb.

Blue tinted bulbs are not road legal - you will see on the packaging that they are sold only for show use. According to the NCT manual the light from headlamps must be either yellow or white.

You could try these, they claim to be the bluest legally acceptable halogen bulbs (4200K).

The ones I linked to and the ones Anjobe linked to will give off a much whiter colour than regular halogen bulbs, but not blue. Anjobe's ones are a little bit whiter. They will make the reflector blue when the lamp is off though.

You won't get a blue light unless you go for >8,000 K HIDs, Aside from roadworthiness and legality, they put out so little light you won't be able to see where you're going. I've had 8,000 K and 12,000 K in reflectors and projectors, and I would not recommend.

Would you consider swapping in the HID projector lamps from a GTI? That's the only way (legally and functionally) to get a bluey light.

Unless he fits the levellers and washers to it'll fail the NCT

As I and others with retrofits on these boards will attest, no it won't. I have no washers with retrofitted HID projectors (which are grafted into halogen housings, rather than OEM) and it's not an issue for the NCT. There was a thread on this not so long ago with a few others in a similar situation.

It's in the manual, yes, but since there's plenty of cars that came factory equipped without washers and/or leveling, it's ignored by the test centres. Otherwise plenty of cars would never be able to pass an NCT, as their type approved system does not include washers. That means retrospectively fitting washers to these cars is also a fail as it's no longer a type approved system  In my opinion, those rules were introduced into the NCT to make it easier to fail PnP HID bulbs without even having to look at the optical setter.

It's also in the manual that front fog lights are to be tested for aim using the optical setter, when have you ever seen a report that doesn't have N/A beside fog light aim? :)

If the car does not have a stock option for HIDs and/or an aftermarket kit has not been fitted, there is a high chance that it will fail the NCT. I have been through this first hand; as of January this year they have tightened up on HID dramatically. If there are no levellers and washers then unless the OP can show that the HID kit in the car is stock and was a stock option on the model of car in question (ie the car rolled out of the factory with HIDs and without levellers and washers) then it is very unlikely it will pass the NCT. It might pass, but its a gamble on whether or not the tester turns a blind eye.

    ...

Whatever you think, but it's not an uncommon thing to do. It's an OEM finish that keeps the NCT happy and surpasses most factory HID options. For anyone interested (probably not those posters who reply with hilarious 4chan images), here's an idea of the process, including an output shot: http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?59292-2014-Ford-Focus-ST-retro-w-MD2S3-s-Matsu-CBI

There's thousands of other build threads in that forum. Might be of interest to the OP if he wants proper HID without forking out for GTI lamps.
