Deciding on pace for a 10 mile race

I'm doing my first ten miler in 3 or so weeks and am interested how others pace these paces. I've done a good few 10ks, dozens of 5ks etc, marathon but never a ten miler. Really looking forward to it.

I'm thinking of going out a bit slower than 10k pace and holding on. I have never ran great in the past when attempting a negative split; I find it hard to pick up pace in the second half of a race. However I can usually hold on if I'm close to my limit (i.e. maintain pace).

Would be nice to hear of the experience & thoughts of others. Ballpark time maybe 67/68 mins if that makes any difference so won't be troubling the podium but want to give it a my best shot :)

What/when was your last 3 races and what time did you get?

As far as I can recall, I ran 39:10 or so for 10km at end of June. Did an 18:50 5k in May and a sprint tri on 21st June in 1:12 (the run was just over 20 mins so possibly useless for the purposes of this!) Edit: I've focussed exclusively on running since that race.

I always use http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/ as a guideline for paces. Obviously don't take it as gospel due to course/conditions etc. but its never too far away. Its estimates your 10 mile time to 1.05.22 from your 5 K run and 1.06.35 from your 10K run. Its a good tool to use for the less obvious distances.

    Thanks for starting this thread

I am in the same condundrum. Infact, even worse coz not only have I never raced the 10 mile distance before, I haven't run as many races as you. I am kicking myself over that now - wish I had run more races before the DCM plan started!

McMillian says, based on a 10K time I ran on Paddy's weekend, that I should go at 8:18.
But, that will have been more than 5 months ago (hence, I wish I had more recent races)
Plus, this will be a hillier course in places and I have some niggles that might play into it all too

    Head scratcher!

Hey basster were you running yesterday in the frank Duffy? If so, how did you get on? I was in the a similar boat to you, very similar times in 10Ks leading up to yesterday, but had never ran in a race as long as 10miles. Did you manage a negative split with those last 2 miles?
