New Job, less Tax credits

    Hi All,

Looking to see what the story is here:

I became unemployed at the end of March and started Job seekers benefit (for 13 weeks). After 8 weeks I applied for a tax refund and received a nice amount back. 5 weeks after that i started a new job. I did not apply for a tax refund for those 5 weeks.

In total I was out of work for 13 weeks.

I have since started a new job and I recently received a new tax credit certificate but I it says I will now get 30 credits less a week.

Does this sound right to people? Also, will I get additional money due to not claiming a tax refund for those last 5 weeks in my next pay check or would this be spread out amount the rest of the year? Or, do I have to wait to get a P21 at the beginning of next year?

Thanks for any info you can provide

Your credits are reduced by the amount of jobseeker's benefit you received for the remainder of the year, that's normal.

Regarding the unused credits for the five weeks you might well be taxed very lightly in you first pay in your new job as long as you are being taxed on cumulative basis, if you don't get a noticeable benefit it's worth your while requesting a P21 at the end of the year.
