birds in chinmey

As of yesterday I have had 4 birds come down my chimney in 2 years. The chimney has a standard metal birdcage at the top which I would have thought would be sufficient to keep birds out. Is it possible for birds to get through the cage if the bars are not spread evenly? I'd need a sufficiently long ladder and roof ladder to go check myself.

What's the best approach to solving this problem .. As I deon't really use the fireplace I'm tempted to get one of those fittings that seal off the chimney and has a chain coming down to the hearth which can release it if a fire is being set.

Had a similar problem a few years ago. I just wrapped the Metal Guard in chicken wire. I haven't had any problems since.
