What would a fighter plane be able to do i that situation?

Shoot it down to stop it crashing into something?

Mancunians are wild men for body searching Irish and Asians in the airport security so they are.

Flash the headlights and apply the hazards to let other jets know the craic.

    "EYE-WITNESS SAW JET
13:59: Chris Phelan, from Heaton Moor, Stockport, was in his garden when he heard the roar of a jet plane before filming it on his camera.
The 42-year-old said: "I looked up and saw what looked like a Typhoon jet flying close to a passenger plane - I thought, that's odd."

That's your only thought seeing a fighter jet flying next to a commercial airliner?

    "That's odd". Jesus, Chris.

Other aircraft have begun to land and take-off again, QTR23 (Qatar Airways) jet is on a remote parking area, all other airport operations back to normal

Airport back to normal now, reports say - planes landing and taking off - looks like a false alarm.

Mainly to assess the situation, and yes... since 9/11, to shoot down the plane if necessary.

its likely the fighter jet was sent to check the plane had no external damage or devices before it attempted to land

Can't they get someone on board?

    Bane got people on board.

    Just dangle some people.

Now that we have mobile internet kay burley can appear to the passengers informing them or their inevitable deaths and asking them do they think its going to hurt.

Jesus I can almost imagine it. A Skype conversation with some poor soul in a doomed jet crying and saying their goodbyes to their loved ones until Kay but in with "And it does now appear that all hope is indeed lost for all 250 passengers now, Mr. Johnson. Could you help give our viewers a sense of what you're going through? It must be hard...? *in her mournful "pretend I give a shiit" tone of voice*

I was expecting something to do with a prize-fighter having the craic with a plane full of escorts on the way to/from Manchester.

    Very disappointed.

It looks ridiculous: you might have to shoot down a passenger plane so you fly beside it? You think there's a bomb on board so you fly beside it, close enough for shrapnel to bring you down too? A quick fly past on after burners should alert pilots to presence and then stand off and lock on?

Did they teach you that at Top Gun school?

Kay now talking to someone who is telling Kay what he knows from what he heard reported on Sky News. I have a picture in my head of a snake swallowing its own tail

It stops the aircraft deviating left or right, meaning if there are terrorists on board they can only go straight, if they have an intended target they are not going to try destroy the plane before reacing the target by crashing into the fighter jet

It flies beside to see who is control of the cockpit before getting trigger-happy.

If it goes tits up, the fighter jet pilot can just do this, not a bother to him.

Maybe he was fapping and said "this is the bomb" and they thought he had a, ahem, device?

    a) Why would it have external damage?
    b) Would it stop mid air, knock politely on the plane door and give the airplane little once-over inside?
