    Hi all

I'm going for a medical in a week or so and am trying to find out what they'll ask/check!
My job is pretty straight forward so I'd imagine it just a standard medical... I'm pretty healthy but overweight so not looking forward to that spiel and them weighing me!!

Does anyone hve any experience with this?!

It is a pretty basic medical check up, from my experience. Blood and urine tests are about as far as it goes. The doctor just fills out a company questionnaire about your health and sends it back. Very routine.

  • If it's with a GP they'll ask about your medical history, I remember them checking for stuff like colourblindness (which a lot of people don't realise they have), it's all basic enough. I think I got weighed but you're in a doctors office, they've seen it all before. I think there was also a urine test but not blood.

Don't worry, they won't weigh you.

You'll have an eye test, blood test, give a urine sample and be asked about your medical history.

I'm not sure if the urine sample would be drug tested, depends on the company, but if you happen to take illegals, er, don't. :)

I was weighed at my last medical and he measured me to calculate my BMI. He checked my blood pressure and did a basic eye test. I gave a urine sample but no blood. He also checked my lung capacity then asked medical history questions.

At a recent medical I had it consisted of a straightforward questionaire, urine test (no bloods), height, weight, eyesight, hearing and general health like reflexes etc.

Doctor kept the details of the medical on file and simply sends back to the company that you can be employed without medical restriction.

Oh right! I guess companies may vary in their requirements.

My dad used to have to do them annually for a multinational. He laid off the drink for a week beforehand (he was a walking brewery). Overweight (he was) - not a problem..just a joke about how joggers are always collapsing from heart attacks saw that off. Following medical it was straight to pub to make up for lost time.
It is routine for insurance purposes.
And as above said, no weed or marching powder just in case they're checking.

I think the only one to really worry about is weed. In a habitual user, it stays in your system for months. I think even for occasional users, it remains for a week or so. Everything else is gone in a matter of days.

MOD-NOTE: The above is not necessarily true. Please do not give or take drug advice on boards.ie. If you have queries about the impact of your drug-use on medicals, please as a doctor.

Do many multinationals test for this these days? From some of the places I've worked in the past (in IT) I think if they started testing for it during medicals (or random testing) it would have seriously impacted hiring and staff retention....

It can be used against you if they need ammo to let you go. [MODSNIPPED]. Go to Jamaica after the medical for all anybody cares. [MOD-SNIPPED - PLEASE DON'T LIBEL PEOPLE HERE] would probably fail a medical on those grounds.
Back to the query, the OP only mentioned being overweight - well, that's hardly a concealed problem. So no worries. Make empty promises and have a burger on me once its done.

MOD-NOTE: Using or possessing "weed" is illegal in this country. Please DON'T be making statements about it here.

Apparently American MNCs are big into it. And as many of them are very desirable employers, and in today's employment market, I don't see there being a staff exodus.

If you've ever given a urine sample in a medical, it possibly was drug tested.

    It depends on the medical.

    I've had BMI/blood pressure medicals, and I've had full organ scanning/blood tests/urine tests/eyesight/x-rays/etc. medicals.

I hope you can use this medical as a motivator to lose weight and get healthier. :)

Yes it's much smarter to ignore discretional health issues and hope they go away on their own.

How do we know anyone is ignoring anything? A patronising assumption to make.

You're trying to turn a little positive comment I made into something about you and your own issues with dieting. Stop taking it personally, it's not about you.

Not at all, but alrighty then. ;) I'd be defensive too if someone pointed out I was being patronising and doling out unsolicited advice. :pac:

Anyway, OP, the medical will be fine.

The medicals I've done consisted of

    height
    weight
    hearing
    sight
    blowing into a tube
    urine (to test for drugs)

That'd be fairly standard of the 3 I've done (only one didn't have a urine test and that was an exit medical).
