Will be very grateful for any assistance that can be provided here.

I've gone back to using a digital camera but not able to get the laptop to read the camera and upload files.

The camera is a Canon Ixus 230HS and the laptop is running on Windows 8.

When I connect camera to laptop by cable/USB I can hear the laptop sound effect acknowledging the USB being used, however the camera doesn't appear in My Computer as an external drive etc...

I tried loading a driver from Canon website for this camera and ended up loading ImageBrowser EX and Silverlight however these don't find the camera either...

Any ideas what the problem might be here, and what I need to do to get the laptop and camera to work together?

Have you tried turning the camera on?

Also why bother connecting the camera at all when your laptop might have a slot for a memory card or you could by a card reader?
