On my tablet so can't postage itself, but take a look here. http://www.rte.ie/news/2014/0804/635039-israel-ceasefire/

Picture of Israeli soldiers walking behind a tank. It looks like the soldiers are a good bit behind the tank, and yet they are the same size?

Anyone know if its just me?

Its a well known fact that the the modern Israeli soldier stands on average at 12 foot high.

This is why they hate fighting in tunnels.

Something something small, something something far away.

Nah, it is weird perspective alright.

It looks very badly photo-shopped to me.

The fact that the soldiers are a good but behind the tank is irrelevant because the camera is much further from it than the soldiers.

The further the camera, the more similar the scale of the objects in the photo.

It is an anti-Tunnel of Mass Destruction Tank. Supplied by America. They thought it was American sized Tunnels they were going down, and as we all know, everything in the USA is bigger. Even the eejits.

I am not a photographer but I am guessing that the image was taken with a huge zoom lens from a great distance

This has the effect of flatting images and making them 2 dimensional or cardboard cut-out like because the relative distance between the objects you are shooting is so much smaller than your distance to them

You see this effect in the red tops when they snap celebs from miles away doing whatever.

The tank is one for very small people who suffer from dwarfism who can fight in tunnels. The others are just normal sized soldiers.

One could blame the photographer but a midget army is more interesting.

Obviously this has something to do with oppressing the Palestinians, but I'm not sure what yet.

    I still don't understand.

If you look at something far away through a pair of powerful binoculars (or in this case a telephoto lens) - the sense of 'depth' of the image is reduced.

But how does something that's closer look smaller?

It doesn't look smaller. It looks the correct size for a tank. Look at the guys sitting on it. Cover the top half of the screen. It looks normal.

The illusion is generated by the soldiers walking in the background which are further away but look bigger than they should be due to the distortion of perspective effect of zoom I described earlier.

Here is another image for you to consider. It is an exactly identical still life shot with different lenses

I meant why does the tank look smaller than the guys in the background, when it's closer to the camera than they are.

Even ignoring the tank, and instead just taking the guys in the background and the guys in the foreground - the guys in the foreground look smaller than the guys in the background. That's what I'm not getting.

Note the size of the moon in frame vs real life. Its heavily zoomed in clearly. Then look at the wolf, it looks large, but we all know that its not the same size as the moon. Its the same effect as we wee in the tank photo.

It's was probably taken with one of those camera/lens that they use to take the pictures of a giant moon...like this

My brain is unable to use your explanation to understand it because you're comparing the size of a wolf with the size of the moon which are two completely different things, whereas the photo in the OP has people closer to the camera who look smaller than the people further away from the camera - and that is completely backwards, to me.

Look I don't know if my brain is defective or not but I'm really not getting it. It's possible my brain is defective. I got it on sale, it was a display model. Thanks for the efforts though!

I think it's just a small size tank and elevated soldiers. It does look strange at first though.

it could be a light tank used for scouting and thereby being small
you can only see half of the people in the tank so they appear smaller the soldiers that are walking have very large packs on their backs so they appear larger.

Because of the distance from where the image was taken the distance between the tank and the soldiers appears to be much further than it actually is. i.e. they are quiet close together the soldiers are just up a steep slope from the tank.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

Also, the soldiers on foot have huge backpacks on, making them look bigger than the guys in the tank.
