BTEA for Postgrads

Hi all, I'm new here. :)

I applied for the BTEA and was refused because I'm a few years too young and haven't been claiming Jobseeker's Allowance long enough. They'd prefer I stay on the dole for another year than do a course which would see me qualified in two years time and give me a career for life!

I think the system is all wrong. Why are they willing to support me on any FÁS course under the sun but they won't give me a penny to do a course that will result in me furthering my education and give me a career at the end of it.

100 euro is a pittance anyway. Young people are disregarded in this country by the disillusioned government who are trying to scrape back some support ahead of next year's elections. They're happy to up my payment to over 200 euro to do one of their community schemes. Apologies but I just find it mind boggling.

Are there any other supports available? I can't defer, SUSI is only paying some of the registration because I'm slightly over the 22,000 cut-off. I'm considering going to my local TD but I can't see them budging. They support the layabouts but won't help those who are trying to better themselves.

Are fees paid under BTEA? Is the 9 moth period still a requirement?

    No. Yes.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
