I know that passenger services on the line ended a few years ago but I'm wondering if the line is even being used by cargo trains?
Is it being maintained and inspected at all? Or is it just being left to rot?

Nothing traverses the line except the annual weedspray train and the occasional inspection car. The line is 'apparently' being maintained to a standard demanded by the the National Transport Authority.

Surprised you had to ask the question as the forum is full of threads about the line - here's one: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=64856001

The Irish Rail network statement states that the line is unavailable for traffic, which is funny given the terms of their agreement with the NTA.

Its probably because the line doesn't meet the standard to allow freight traffic.

i wonder do the NTA even bother checking to see if the line is being maintained or am i giving them to much credit

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

it still should be available for traffic though, it belongs to the people of ireland, to many of our lines have been lost or left to rot by those intrusted to look after them on our behalf

They do but IE and the NTA usually need to be reminded.

While I agree with the sentiment, perhaps those same people should be given adequate support to carry this out. As it stands that support is not enough to keep the core routes functioning satisfactorily, never mind subsidising unprofitable and underutilised routes.

It is not fully owned by the state according to this entry

There's no distinction in the document, which is designed to facilitate prospective open access operators. The other lines with that classification are basically impassable or were disconnected from the network during Tricky Dicky's reign of terror.
