Young lad going into Farming

    Here's my story

I didn't live on a farm but I worked on my 2 uncles farms (sucklers)when I was young . Started working on neighbours farm (suckler) when I was 10 helping him with the small things . Left when I was 13 and started chasing skirt ! .started learning a lot about computers and became a bit of techy by 17 .still had a interest but no farmer would take me on .went to college and dropped out due to the fact I had lost interest in I.T . I wanted to see myself working outside a office .

Anyways I sign on to dole last august. At 1st twas great getting the aul €100 a week but began to hate it by November so went researching on getting into Farming (Herd number) but I needed a crush, yard and shed .Ask the uncle if I could use his 2nd farm to just get the herd number and he was having none of it the sour ****! .so by January I decided to get my **** together and get the canadian work visa .Got it in April and the interest in farming started to decline again until a farmer ask me to do a few odd jobs for him around the farm .After 2 weeks I was working 6 days a week milking and managing the farm with him .Never milked before but I love it .He has 4 farms ,1 dairy,2 beef and 1 tillage .

I've learned more in 4 months about farming than I ever did in all my other years ! Have learnt a lot from him about the finance side of farming and in return I show him how to use I.T in farming . Even though he's paying me €80 a week but I still have the other pay check ;) I'm currently saving to head to Canada in September so I'm gonna be leaving soon but I have a plan .

I'm gonna go to canada for 2 years and come back and rent a small farm with a bit of land and get the herd number.Buy in 10 beef heifers and let the bull run with them and sell them when they are in calf and start over again if it works and hopefully start building up the herd the next year

Any advice on this method is appreciated

Go to Canada earn some real money ,travel, see different cultures do things you'd never do meet lots of ladies then start your farming career.your only young once don't get bogged down in a farm you'll only resent it in the long term .i worked off farm for over 10 years traveled. Broadened my mind met a few ladies and pissed away a lot of money but I wouldn't swap any of it.now happily married with one daughter and full time dairy farmer,100% happy

Totally agree. Go to Canada and see a bit of the world and have a bit of fun before getting bogged down.
Even my grandfather an awful lot of years ago did that! He earned enough to buy extra land which I'm now happily farming. Times may have moved on but the basic principle is the same.
    Best of luck to ya.

You will be a better farmer for seeing the world beyond the farm gate. Maybe spend a year on a farm in Canada after you time on the oil lines or whatever you have lined up

Sound for the advice lads . Yeah think I might put it back a while .

Yeah I'm planning on working in oil industry over and then a farm after .
Was talking to my boss today and he told me it's cheaper been a herion addict than to be a farmer!

go to the farm first. if you get hooked up on the rigs its hard to leave the good money to go back farming. And try and settle the head a bit, too much chopping and changing going on.
