Father is looking for a 4x4 as a 2nd car for 70% road 30% messy use. He knows nothing about them so we need something "low maintenance".

Engine size not too important, will probably be commercial.

What are the complete lemon make/models to stay away from? And what is the best value for money.

Unless you know your way around these 4x4 it can become expensive very fast with the wrong one.

Defenders are idea but in that price bracket it be trouble.

Forget about range rovers as they are too expensive to keep repaired.

Discovery in the range rover range

Jeep Grand Cherokee if full serviced

The patrol or land cruiser would be good Jap models.

All the other soft roaders and pickups are poor excuses for 4x4

Try get a engine above 2.5. Diesel

At 70% road use/tipping around, how about a Suzuki Grand Vitara?

3.2 pajero are a good jeep. Have one, no complaints with 150k+ miles. For 6k you should pick up a clean one. Ya won't get much in the line of a lc for that money though. At 70% road, the pajero has more road manners too. The ford ranger is also a bullet proof pickup and comfortable which is a big + in comparison to it's competition.

Id say try a newer version of the discovery td5 - 03 or 04 model. You'll get one of the best on the market at 5/6 grand, with lowish mileage, especially if buying a commercial.

Positives: Lighter on diesel than any other proper 4x4, even with an auto box, extremely comfortable, can tow 3.5 tonnes with ease, fantastic in the fields or mud, great presence and road manners, decent street cred (if that matters to you), and is more reliable than the earlier ones. Bulletproof engine and auto gearbox. No dual mass flywheel (if automatic)

Negatives: Can give complicated electronic problems, especially with higher mileage. Thats it.

You'd get a cracking 90 series Landcruiser for half that money! Done up to 2002 AFAIK. 3.0L engine, 250,000 on mine and never a heecup. She passes the DOE most times, and when it fails its usually a bushing or something small like that. The only drawback is that they're thirsty. On the road its fine, but if you're going to be pulling weight, you'll only get 20 MPG or so. Don't know how that compares to other yokes.

great machines them older landcruisers. My 3.2 pajero gets between 30-35 max mpg on road unladen but that drops to 25-28 pulling livestock. They're all thirsty when pulling.

+1 for the 00-02 landcruiser... If you want low maintenance, these are the definition of it. If you look after one, it will do half a million miles, if you don't, it will still do half a million, just a bit more rattly.. the engines are ultra reliable. 30mpg normal road use, very comfortable too. I just took mine to Italy.. nuff said.

If i had 6k to spend on a jeep i would break the budget in 2. €5.5k on a pajero, cruiser, pathfinder etc.
Spend the €500 on an old jeep for the messy stuff. Alot of fun to be had with an old jeep and no loss if its wrote off on a Sunday. Very easy up the power in older jeeps to give them better go. In the video below you wouldn't go throwing around a jeep worth €6k the way these do.

Where will he find a working 4x4 (jeep ) for 500 euro ?
That's about what a good set of wheels for one cost.
