Studio Ghibli To Close It's Doors.

After much speculation over the future of the company,it appears that the legendary Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli is set to close after a 29 year run. Sources suggest it was due to the recent failure of the Studio's latest film,'When Marnie Was There.' It was officially announced here.

While I'm not the biggest fan,it is a shame that a studio that puts a lot of care and emphasis on how children (and adults) lives impact the world and each other ceases to be. Miyazaki's storytelling, work ethic and philosophy was crucial to the companies development and its success in Japan and overseas. A great achievement for all those involved for their production of high quality traditional animation.

    EDIT Another source in English.

The world of animation will never be the same. :(

Man, that's awful to hear :(

Dunno why I'm stunned to hear it, when you compare the quality of the animation in Ghibli releases to the production line stuff that's generally churned out in Japan, you'd have to imagine they were operating on pretty low profit margins.

With Miyazaki retiring, I guess it wouldn't have been the same anyway but the Tale of Princess Kaguya looks like it could be really good.

Disney should buy them, think about it.

Then they could make brilliance like this.

If this is indeed true, part of me will naturally be disappointed. After we get to see Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Marnie and the TV show they are working on, then there'll be no more giddy anticipation as that iconic Totoro studio title card flashes on screen.

But at the same time, I'd actually be sort of relieved. There's been a few good and even one or two excellent films from other directors at the studio, but let's be honest here: Ghibli is Miyazaki and Takahata. With their retirements, Ghibli no longer have the two creative forces that defined it. Many of their 'successors' have been coming along nicely, and hopefully they can continue evolving their directorial style outside Ghibli - perhaps even discover a newfound freedom. But the studio itself will forever be defined by those two visionaries (I don't like the word, but if it was ever warranted...), and there's something quite poignant about the studio gracefully retiring after each of them put together two final great films (I haven't seen Bamboo Cutter, but have heard very positive things).

So let Ghibli take a bow along with its two greatest talents - the legacy will always be there. But they better keep that beautiful museum open!

Just no! Becoming a mere cog in a Hollywood or Disney machine would be a fate worse than death. A studio as proud and distinctive as Ghibli being put to work on Star Wars animations would be a legitimately depressing state of affairs. No studio in the history of cinema has ever managed to maintain the same level of artistic freedom in spite of huge commercial success (at their peak anyway).

Yep, Ghibli never really managed to move on from Miyazaki and Takahata. The death of Yoshifumi Kondo seemed to pretty much stop them from even trying for a decade there, didn't it?

There was the Cat Returns, which is one of only two Ghibli films I'd say I genuinely disliked (no prizes for guessing the other one ;).

While there has been talk among some about dissolving the studio outright, Suzuki emphasized that the truth is that the studio is considering “housecleaning” or restructuring for now. The end result would be “rebuilding” the studio and creating an environment for the next generation.
