They are in the station or in court for three weeks out of every month.

They are only 'unleashed' just before their 'monthlys'.

Never noticed it, I have noticed though the far reaching aura of dickhead that a lot of the blokes seem to have.

Years ago, folk of the sod became guards because they wanted to.

These days, it's the destitute who can't find employment elsewhere who become guards out of desperation. So a lot of them find themselves out of their depth, thus adopt a dickhead approach as a defense mechanism.

I should clarify by saying that I've never been in trouble with guards, but have observed plenty in action and I have also dealt with them professionally.

On far too many occasions I have seen such wonderful traits such as brash, ignorant, egotistical, obnoxious and quite simply offensive. The second you query their business these traits come to the fore.

It's a shame as these are the ones that stay in the minds of people, and sully the good work that many do in the eyes of the public.

It's not a gender specific thing either.

I've generally found them to be friendly enough. I reckon they may get the piss ripped out of them a bit more (would a similar thread started about male guards work?), thus would naturally be more reserved and on the defensive in regular interactions.

Again, I'm purely hypothising here because I've never really found much difference. There's friendly and unfriendly guards.

There's a couple of female Gards around here that are stunners as it happens. I can't comment on their attitude cos I'm usually too busy smiling like a fool and trying to see through a stab-vest.

If I had to deal with a fraction of the idiots they do on a daily basis I'd have a far grumpier head on me.

The majority of ban gardai lack the natural physical authority of most of their male colleages so, in certain situations where they feel a touch of intimidation is called for, they adopt the face and demeanour of a bulldog licking piss from a nettle.

    In a word: overcompensation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭Teyla Emmagan

They have to look cross. If they went around all happy and smiley people (wrongdoers and the like) would try and walk all over them. That 'don't mess with me face' has to be the first thing they teach in Ban Gardai 101 in Templemore.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,412 ✭✭✭Shakespeare's Sister

Always suspicious of people who say they hate the guards and all the guards are dicks.
Any dealings I've had with the guards (breathalysing, getting caught speeding/with my mobile in my hand, standard procedures like getting forms stamped, giving evidence as witness to an assault) the vast majority were absolutely grand, some of them really nice, including the ones where I was very much in the wrong. One very (and unnecessarily) unpleasant older fella when breathalysed one Christmas, and that was it (I wasn't over the limit, he was just really rude and intimidating - some folks feel that's the correct way to assert authority though).

I know there are obviously some scummy guards (the news in recent months is proof enough of that) and I'd say some of them can be right "beauts" to people living in areas that are blighted with crime, but saying they're all scum is just stupid.

Could be a new one for the savage eye - "Samantha - too friendly, scowl girl, scowl, scowl like you broke a nail... -- Georgia, imagine someone stole your Jimmys - that's the one girl, that's the one,, scowl.."

Couldn't give a fuck if they look cross! For every four big heifer ban gaurds there's alway one who would defo get the ride! "you can leave your hat on"

Fully agree that all who go to Templemore end up brain-washed though! I know a few lads who used to be sound growing up and have completely changed having done their training.

Ive had to deal with enough male and female ones over the years some are absolute bastards of the highest nature and i mean that its not even about not liking them.

On the other hand ive met plenty of decent ones as well who not only did me a favor but went out there way to make life easier for me.

On the subject of female police i remember one drunken night in town with me mates few years back we must of been to every second place we walked by and had a drink! anyway we where walking threw temple bar it wasnt that busy so as u do i started shaking everyones hand nothing abusive or trying start fights i was just being a friendly dope :pac:. One of these people happens to be a guard of the female nature and i have to say she was very down to earth!.

Believe me a lot of them would of told us to **** off or started threatening different things but nah she had a chat with us laughed shook my hand the lot and its true you dont forget the friendly ones !.

I know they have a **** job at times but its the ***** out there who give them a bad name theres plenty of nice decent people working in the police as well just a shame they dont stand out as much as the others!.

Seen one last week and she was no bigger than the little one from the Krankies. So I gave her boot and she landed on top of the Spire.

As God is me judge. No word of a lie.

The only thing that would match a ban garda in levels of kuntiness would be a motorcycle garda. There would be a slight difference between the two, bikerbobby being permanently angry, but slightly more intelligent and rational.

If you are ever stopped by a female bikerbobby, I strongly suggest dropping to the ground and curling into the foetal position.

Maybe because every time you're encountering them they're trying to caution, arrest or give you a telling off about something.

To be fair, I've met plenty of friendly, smiley, chatty Gardai.

They're not there to be customer service agents. They've a fairly tough job dealing with all sorts of scumbag characters and they don't even get any weapons.

So, I'd say the stern looking scowl is essential!

The yanks would be all smiles while tazering and pepper spraying ya for heinous crimes like jay walking.

They are very quick to use the weapons they do have, i.e. knuckles and brogues.
Go on, ask me how I know.

My dealings with the Gardaí have all been positive apart from when one occasion when a flat I was staying in was broken into and I felt after making a statement there was absolutely zero enthuasiasm on their part to do anything. They more or less said they would never find anyone and left it at that. They did not even come up for a look around and mentioned that the guys in the squadcar will keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

But on a general level when in ordinary dealings have never found any to be discourteous. People who generally hate the Gardaí are those who have created reasons for the Gardaí to have to deal with them in a professional manner.

I'd be cross too if I was encased in that horrible uniform all day.

Only met one notably mean tempered Garda in my life, he came to the house after a burglary and told us that if we insisted on having things worth stealing, then someone would probably try steal them. It was like we were deliberately inconveniencing him.

Nope, because the Garda fanclub powers that be here would have it off to the digital dustbin in a nanosecond.

Went to get a form stamped up in Ballymun during the week. I was left there standing in front of an unmanned desk for what felt like ages, muttering to myself about ****in cops and lazy arsed public servants who I pay my tax to... And then this smiling vision of sexyness..a petite blonde complete with **** me eyes and a golden smile arrives behind the counter...i just started blabbering about my lost licence.. New car to buy.. Insurance.... Etc... She kept smilling and just stamped my form...if I could have given her a reason to take me to the cells I would have.

The formal uniform could do with a total redesign. The new general purpose uniform looks OK though. It's a massive improvement over the old one. At least it looks modern.

You'd feel sorry for some of the UK police officers who have to wear those bobby helmets! They look very impractical. Some really odd uniforms on the continent too in a few places.

Most US uniforms aren't exactly flattering either.

You'd think though that they could come up with several versions of the Garda uniform.

Like for patrol, a better looking dress uniform that looks good on different builds of people and an office uniform for when they're not on need of stab proof gear.

The worst uniform I've ever seen though is Bus Éireann ! Needs drastic updating. Looks like a school uniform or something.

    These things impact on morale.
If you feel you look the part, you'll be more likely to be confident and happy.

Not only are they impractical, but a by-law allows a pregnant woman ask to urinate in them if caught short in public.

I think the Bobby hats are phased out now, in favour of this
