Hi I started working recently and on my most recent payslips I seem to have got taxed a good bit but maybe it's correct!

Ill post figures as I dont really mind

    Week 1 - 39 hours
    Gross: 339.20
    Paye: 35.84
    USC: 23.74
    Total deds 59.58
    Net: 279.62

    Week 2 - 41 hours
    Gross: 365.29
    Paye: 41.06
    PRSI: 14.61
    USC: 25.57
    Total deds: 81.24
Net: 284.05 (hardly worth my while doing overtime!!!)

My dad says of that the only thing he reckons I could get back is the prsi but another girl who works there who's also 17 seems to be paying only about 40/50 euro tax over the two weeks!! (we get paid every two weeks)

So, Im really clueless, am I entitled to not pay any of this? Thanks

It looks like you are on the starting employment week 1/month 1 tax. Are you properly registered. Have you registered your emploment with revenue.

Welcome to the world of PAYE. You may wish to do some reading regarding the various taxes you are now subject to. The links below will assist you.
However if you look at your payslip and provide your "tax code" ie "E", "w1" or "N" "Cum" we will be able to assist further.

Based on the values for USC (7% of gross pay), it looks like you're on Emergency tax- your payslip might show the letter E or possibly W1 if this is the case.

If you're on emergency tax, you need to contact your local tax office, tell them your PPS number and advise that you've started working with {employer name and address}. They will send you and your employer a tax credits certificate which will sort things out (assuming that it's not a summer job and you're still with the employer). Otherwise, any refund will take a bit longer to process through the tax office (and possibly not be done until after December).

For week 1 you should not be paying any PAYE or PRSI. Only the USC. The USC should only be about 10 euro.
You are paying emergency tax. You need to ring Revenue and quote your PPS no and you employers number. Then move you tax credits to your employer.
