Facebook 'David and Goliath' lawsuit

A law student has called on Facebook's one billion users worldwide to join a class action fight against the social network over privacy rights.

Austrian campaigner Max Schrems is claiming damages of €500 (£397) per supporter for alleged data protection violations.

He has billed it as a ‘David and Goliath lawsuit’ and it could ultimately be the largest class and privacy action ever taken in Europe.

I joined the class action lawsuit but what are the odd's of him winning, Can you see any problems with the lawsuit?

Beyond class action law suits not being available in Ireland, the myriad of jurisdictions and sheer madness of running a case for €500? Nope none at all.

It was meant to be, to be fair. Sorry my sense of humour sometimes gets the better of me.

Sounds like a great stunt but nothing more I'm afraid. There would be far better ways of dealing with this domestically.

    €500 (£397) "per supporter"

So assuming a million supporters ?

I joined the class action lawsuit

Why? Please give a reasonably detailed answer.

The main point is that the major internet companies do not respect our fundamental rights to privacy and data protection, Outside of the US and Canada, Facebook is provided by “Facebook Ireland Ltd“. This company has its headquarters in Dublin, thus falls under EU law. Facebook has a long list of violations. The privacy policy, participation in the PRISM program, Facebook’s graph search, apps on Facebook, tracking on other web pages (e.g. via the “like buttons”), “big data” systems that spy on users or the non-compliance with access requests.

You can't make a subscriber agreement that undermines EU law

Do you have to 'like' his lawsuit page?

    :pac:

Locus standi. You seemed pretty against the idea so I wondered if you had a page.

I also don't fully understand your list of complaints. Prism aside the rest seem to be things you voluntarily entered into.

Oh look i can't be arsed arguing about it i support the guy because he's willing to challenge the company (I like to support the underdog) and if he wins i might get a few bob.
Give me one good reason why you shouldn't support him?

Not how this works. You want to posit an idea or a position (I support Schrems for example) then you back it up. Self-interest and a dislike for Facebook on spec as they are the big-bad company being your motivators I couldn't be arsed arguing either. Best of luck

In order to process your request to join a crusade against data protection violations by Facebook, we would like you to entrust your personal details along with a copy of your passport or driving license to a college student.
