I am trying to record myself and I cant seem to get it working. I am using the audacity program and have the 3.5 lead hooked up to the laptop. When I press record the only thing it is picking up is the audio from the monitors that the laptops built in microphone is picking up. I was reading that you need to change the laptops mic input to a line in but I cant figure out how to do it. Im using a levnovo y40 if someone can tell me how to do it.

Windows 7? Go to sound in the control panel click on the recording tab then change the default recording device from integrated device/microphone array to microphone, right click the integrated device and choose disable as well

Sorry i should have said its windows 8, when i goto the rcording tab the only 2 things there are microphone which is enabled and stero mix which is disabled. I tried using stero mix and disabling microphone but was getting nothing then.

I see the Y40 has a combo headphone/mic socket. AFAIK it should detect if you are using headphones or a mic based on those black segments on the 3.5mm jack. If you are using a double-ennded 3.5mm lead it may only have heaphone configuration segments which may explain why Audacity isn't picking it up as a mic. Only other suggestion is to go into the Realtek control panel and see is there a way to force the socket to behave as a mic/line-in
